Today I visited a café with a nice outdoor seating area. However, some people were smoking nearby, and it made me think about an important feature that could be helpful on Google Maps.
In some countries and cities, smoking is common in cafés, restaurants and public spaces. Before visiting a place, users may want to know whether it is:
- A completely non-smoking location
- Smoking allowed only outdoors
- A place with a designated smoking area
- A location where smoking is allowed anywhere
Google Maps already provides helpful information such as accessibility, parking, outdoor seating and other amenities. I think adding “Smoking” or “No-Smoking” information would also be useful, especially for families, children, older people and anyone who wants to avoid cigarette smoke.
This information could be added by business owners, or Google Maps could allow users and Local Guides to answer a simple question after visiting:
“Is smoking allowed at this place?”
Possible answers could be:
- No smoking
- Outdoor smoking only
- Designated smoking area available
- Smoking allowed
- Not sure
