As a foodie, I love all kinds of food. Finding new restaurants and trying new cuisines are my favorite things to do. Nevertheless, it’s hard to have expertise in all. As for me, I know more about Asian food, French food, and American food, and am less familiar with Russian food, North European food, and African food. When it comes to African food, the first thing comes to my mind is always couscous. I’d had couscous many times with stew meat, which I love and enjoy, but had never visited an original African restaurant.
Why La Khaïma Cuisine Nomade?
La Khaïma Cuisine Nomade is in Mile-End, my favorite neighborhood in Montreal. I’d passed by this place many times and had been fascinated by its traditional decoration and unique vibes. So once, after a long day, I decided to treat myself a good meal, and La Khaïma Cuisine Nomade was the first food place sprang to mind.
What to eat?
They don’t have many options on the menu so no hard decision needs to be made. I ordered a plate of couscous with three different types of stews, beef, chicken, and vegetables. Their hummus and pita bread are also nice to try (I actually ate too much so when the main dish was served, I were already half-full).
I am happy that you enjoyed couscous is one of my favorite dish. I may clarify something that not all African people prepare that dish just North Africa like Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia. Each country has its way but it’s always the couscous grain which they use.
When you said “Pita and Hummus”. I thought more Middle East because it’s their specialty not North Africa.
Do you know which part of Africa is that restaurant please?
Couscous is defo one of the best, especially when it comes with stews. And thanks for letting me know. I’ll be more than willing to learn more about African food :D.
I checked google map and found that La Khaïma is a Moroccan restaurant.
@ChanneLing , You are very welcome friend. I checked the same website but I found it is Mauritanian but anyway, we are all African and each country has different dishes.
If you come to NY, I will invite you to try our Moroccan couscous and you may like it too.
Thank you @SunshineNY ! As I’ve mentioned in the article, I don’t know much about African food. It’s so pleasant to learn such things from an expert :D! That’s the magic of Connect and Internet right?
NY, I love that city! I’m sure there’re many good restaurants serving authentic exotic food. Are there any restaurants you’d recommend :)?
Another amazing post @ChanneLing ! It is so well detailed and the photos, as usual are looking phenomenal. I’m really happy that you’ve enjoyed couscous. This is one of my favorite Moroccan dishes. If you ever have the chance, I recommend that you try harira, which is a traditional Moroccan soup that is made of tomato, lentils, chickpeas, meat and lots and lots of spices. Tajine is also a dish that I adore and if you think that the couscous is delicious you’ll probably become a fan of this one too.
From so much food talking I almost forgot to thank you for the brilliant publication, so thank you and note that I’ll be looking forward to your future posts.
@ChanneLing ، Hi dear, sorry for the late, I didn’t see your message until today. You’re very welcome and yes, there are a lot Moroccan restaurants in NYC. I can even invite you to my house and try Moroccan food. It will be my pleasure also to recommend you some Moroccan restaurants. If you plan to come, I will give you all details what you need to discover in NYC.
Hi @KlaudiyaG , thank you! I’ll definitely try harira and tajin when I have the chance. Stew food and warm soup are two of my favorite dishes so I’m sure I’ll enjoy them!
By the way, I googled these two dishes and found that there’s a variety of tajin and they’re all served with a mountain shaped cooking pot (the “tajin” I assume). Does that mean tajin is a method of cooking, or does it really have one special recipe?
That’d be wonderful! Seems about time for me to start planning another NYC trip lol. By the way, which season would you recommend to visit NYC? Last time I visited there in chilly winter, during Xmas season. It was a great experience, the canned-sardine-like crowd around Rockefeller center was insane though. XD
That’s right, @ChanneLing ! Tajine is kind of a slow cooking pot for savory stews, if that makes sense. The most common tajine you’ll find in Morrocco is the chicken one, which is prepared with vegetables and it is absolutely delicious. My other favorite one is a lamb with prunes tajine. Only thinking about it makes me hungry.
Voila @KlaudiyaG ! Yum yum, I like chicken and lamb, especially chicken, it’s my favorite meat choice. However, the lamb tajin does sound divine. Lamb stew, in my opinion, is the best way to cook lamb, since the meat can be fully soaked in the stew with spices and vegetables. Now I really have to look up a Moroccan restaurant which serves tanji!
I totally agree with you. It’s hard to prepare lamb and not everyone knows how to cook it properly, so that it won’t become dry. As a lamb fan, I don’t usually order it very often in restaurants, because of this particular reason, but in Morocco it’s hard to find a not brilliantly cooked lamb. I feel like they are masters when it comes to cook this type of meat. I really hope that you’ll have the chance to visit Morocco and if you do I want to hear everything about it @ChanneLing !
Oh my! It looks so goooooooooooooood! @SunshineNY I’ve never had lamb cooked with raisins but I’m sure it’d taste good.
Last time I went to Central Park in December and it was all brown and grey. I really want to visit it again in the flower blossom season. That’d be April or May, I guess?
@ChanneLing yes, in spring time, you can see Central Park with different look.
What I love about NYC is the whole year and 24 hours you will enjoy the city. The city who never sleeps. There are too many places where to hung out.
I recommend you lower Manhattan: Greenwish Village, Soho, Little Italy, Chinatown:Those places are combination of different countries in one place because they’re all located in the same spot.
Nice restaurants style French with outdoor, night clubs…shopping stores.
The best thing in NYC, you don’t need a car or cab because of traffic. Just a metro card and Google map and your are fine and SAFE. I insist on that because some people think NYC is full of crimes No! I feel very safe on it. Of course, you don’t go to some bad areas but those places I told you it’s safe and I can tell you where to go and which station you get out.
Just when when you decide let me know and I will recommend you places.
That lamb Tajine was in Morocco, in case you want to visit Morocco. I will show you good and safe place also.
