What’s the most interesting thing you’ve done as a Local Guide: Contributing on all Continents
In 2018 I achieved my goal of travelling to all seven continents, the last one being Antarctica. It’s something I’ve wanted to achieve since I started travelling in 2009. Looking at a map of places I’ve contributed to reminds me of my travels and the scope of it all.
One of the highlights of a trip to Antarctica is a visit to Port Lockroy which has the most southernly operational post office in the world. While researching my trip to Antarctica I remember trying to google what prices were in Port Lockroy, how much money should I bring, and what was available to purchase as a souvenir. I was mostly excited about the potential opportunity to mail a postcard from Port Lockroy and frustrated I couldn’t find the details about price and availability. Applying to Connect Live reminded me of this experience and why I spend time taking photos of inside shops, menus, and stock items. I like the practicality of contributing to future Antarctica and Port Lockroy travellers experiences.
Besides being a fun stat, writing reviews and adding photos to Google Maps on all continents helps me feel connected to the places I visit and the people I meet along the way. It brings me back to the touching Museum of Memory and Human Rights in Santiago, Chile or the delicious curry I had in Habarana, Sri Lanka. My reviews are almost like a travel journal of my experiences across these continents.
There is a little bit of internal competition I have created for myself. As I mentioned it started when I decided to travel to each continent. What’s my next challenge? This will likely be to keep exploring and challenge myself with new adventures. Maybe even to every country. Working on that part!
