All knowledge seekers, students and job seekers can avail this library for reaching their goals and objectives. This is one of the four National Depository Libraries in India which receive a copy of all books, newspapers and periodicals published in India. Established in 1890, the library is a repository of centuries-old publications, wherein lie some of the most recognized works and collections in the country. It also serves as a depository library for the UN.
The new building added in 1973 has ground plus 3 floors with well lit fully air-conditioned large halls. Drinking water, toilets with wheel chair access and lifts are available. Have good seating arrangements and have vast collection of books. A much sought-after textbook section, a periodicals hall, a reference room, a video room, an entire floor for books from the Indian languages, a Braille Library and an IAS study centre which is much used by aspiring civil servants are available. There are separate tables marked for ladies to make them more comfortable. Children section has adequate collection. Library database is digitally accessible through computers kept there and also the staff help to locate the books if approached.
Digitized books e are available for reading using tablets, photo copying of books for reference (payable) and use and pay internet access are available. The library can be used during Monday to Saturday: 9:00 AM - 7:30 PM, Sunday: 9:30 AM - 6:00 PM. One can apply for library membership and take books on loan.
This library is located right on the main road inside Chennai Museum compound. Enough parking place is available. This library is a treasure trove for job seekers, knowledge gatherers, students and aspiring civil servants.
