I live in Pretoria in South Africa and I am shocked at how many people are not aware of the google local guide concept.
Is there a way we can create awareness?

It is great that you want to bring the Local Guides program to more people.
I recommend creating a meet-up on our meet-up site and interested Local Guides in your area can indicate their interest via RSVP. You can share your meet-up more widely on your social channels, which may garner your friends or family to become Local Guides too!
By the way, since what you have posted is not an idea, I will move it to the Meet-ups section of Connect, since it fits better there.
