I don’t believe our local area has a connect moderator - correct me if I’m wrong else is there any way I could assume the role and help ensure the accuracy and approval of important local edits.

nonetheless the essence of connect moderators is not to approve edits but to moderate activities around local guide connect (That is here) by guiding local guides on the dos and don’ts of mapping and the community. this explanation might not be all inclusive but is a clarification for you.

Is there any role that do help with approval or is it purely automated?
@TomK02 approvals are both automated and verified by Googlers. It means if the edits are not immediately approved it will require staff at Google to review the edits and approve if they’re convinced. It may be a short time or even up to a year.
So, it is important to include vital details/evidence when make contributions on the Maps i.e photos/videos of the front, business name, opening hours, website, phone number etc.
