Greetings and Salutations wonderful people of Connect.
My name’s Tony an LG level 10. I’m a southern California transplant from Detroit, Michigan in the U.S.A. At present, I have been staycationing ( stay + vacation) or workationing ( work + vacationing) in Tokyo, Japan for over 10 years.
The pandemic in Tokyo has been at times stressful and overwhelming, but at other times survivable with some small happiness… Having a supportive wife and my local burger shop have made all the difference in helping me manage the stress of job insecurity and melancholy. There’s almost nothing a greasy double chili - cheeseburger couldn’t cure!
Most foreign fast food franchises don’t last very long here in Japan, mainly due to poor sales and finicky eaters. This is mainly due to the locals loosing interest in monster sized burgers. The blank stoic look a local person makes is hard to recreate. I can still imagine the local’s tiny lips and mouths trying to stuff a quarter pounder is painful to look at, but they try all the while maintaining an air of dignity. Some give up and use a knife and fork. I seen someone use a pair of chopsticks once, even to eat their fries.
I am thankful American fast food franchises like Wendy’s stayed in Japan. I am glad they did not leave us expatriates out to here to endure the onslaught of healthy, low-fat food options. Maybe we could eat tofu burgers…I hear there’s a rice burger now. Is there a sashimi burger, anyone?
As a local guide, I keep my fellow Americans informed on where to find amazing burger shops, but for the sake of this post, I will choose only one great burger shop and that is Wendys. It is still the most original junk food fast food for me. Never changing its menu to suit local tastes, but keeping everything original and really good. I feel my posts contribute to keeping these burger shops open. I draw many homesick Westerners to them; looking for that cheeseburger miracle cure.
I’d like to thank Wendy’s for keeping it real in 2020 ~ 2021!
