Juneteenth, also known as Juneteenth Independence Day or Freedom Day, is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. The day is officially recognized by 47 states as either a state holiday, a ceremonial holiday, or a day of observance.
Juneteenth is an opportunity for reflection and to share stories of history, similar to how April Hamm, a Local Guide from New Orleans, has done through her contributions on Google Maps. April is an activist, educator, and musician, who is dedicated to preserving and sharing stories of Black history. April creates lists and adds and reviews places with cultural significance on Google Maps. By visiting historic places in New Orleans — such as Congo Square and the Free People of Color Museum — and adding information about them to the map, April makes history more accessible and advocates for collective memory in her community.
To learn more about April’s story and how she is commemorating Juneteenth in her community, watch this video:
Thank you April for showing us that being a Local Guide on Google Maps is more than leaving reviews — it’s a way to share and commemorate the stories of history. And thank you to all of you Local Guides in our community who are dedicated to preserving history as much as April is.
This is an exceptional post, commemorating and preserving the black history. Thank you for sharing the post with us here on connect and for April’s video as well.I am quite interested in this because I often visit Liberia and the history of the freed slaves from America is quite alive there and the descendants of the slaves as well. There are some monuments raised there which are quite interesting.
I know providence Island in the city of Monrovia in Liberia where the ship carrying the freed slaves from America first landed.
There is a tribe called the Congo people in Liberia, which are the direct descendants of the freed slaves from America. Etc
Happy juneteenth independence day
Happy freedom day.
Thank you April for your contributions and efforts on this.
In Liberia the moto of the country is:The love of liberty brought us to Liberia .

Hola @izzyp223 excelente tu publicación, estas historias que hablan de libertad son conmovedoras y te hacen reflexionar sobre los tantos activistas que luchan por tantas libertades que hubo, hay y habrá en el mundo.
Thank you @izzyp223 for sharing this memorial day with us.
I was not aware of it, so it is welcome that it is brought to the attention all over the world, not just in the States.
When we move our eyes to the historical monuments or a place then we get some lovely or inspirational aspects that are teaching us to be kind to the creations. It’s a lovely contribution @izzyp223 by April Hamm and helpful to get us the inspirations to rank our contributions.
Thanks for sharing with us in the connect forum and thanks April Hamm for your lovely contributions.
