Colombo – The Seafood Heaven

Sri Lanka, being an island with a tropical climate, coconuts and seafood are two of the most influential components of Sri Lankan cuisine. Throughout years of colonization and influence from other countries, Sri Lanka has adapted its food culture into a blend of different curry concoctions and tasty dishes.

Being the capital city, Colombo has no shortage of seafood dishes. Seafood restaurants in Colombo of having the freshest catch, cooked and seasoned to perfection either Sri Lankan style or any way you prefer. From the zesty Jaffna crab curry to Japanese EbiShioyaki cooked and seasoned with spices native to the island.

For those who prefer to get right down and dirty, I’m listing down my most favorite 5 seafood restaurants in Colombo.

01. Black Pepper

Black Pepper restaurant is on Dutch Hospital premises. And it’s a lovely air-conditioned restaurant with delicious food and excellent service. The garlic crab, fish curry are scrumptious here. Got some good cocktails and try their happy hours. On above all, everything comes under budget!!!

02. Ministry of Crab

One of Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants since 2015. Ministry of Crab is in the same neighborhood as on Dutch Hospital premises, run by Chef Darshana Munidasa who partnered with Sri Lankan Cricketing Legends MahelaJayawardane and Kumar Sangakkara. It specializes in crab cuisine and the food is just plain mouth-watering. Also it’s a high-end restaurant and its better you reserve a table before the visit.

03. The Station

The restaurant is situated by the beach. Extra-large Crab curry and Hot butter cuttlefish are the best here. For food enthusiasts, the friendly staff is more than happy to provide information about the preparation and cooking process. Even they allow you to video the cooking process.

04. Barracuda

Barracuda is in the same neighborhood as The Station and they have got something in common – good seafood. They do a good take on Sri Lankan Chinese, and their hot butter cuttlefish is one of the best. They don’t serve liquor here, but you can bring your liquor with you if you wish.

05. The Fat Crab

The Fat Crab is well known for their Large crabs and tiger prawns. The crab curry with kadepaan (Sri Lankan Bread) is one of the best. You know you’ve got the curry right when you’re willing to eat just the gravy and bread. The restaurant got a wonderful ambiance and the staffs are very friendly.
