Today I would like to share a photo that has a story. In this picture, you can see a harmless little animal from the Jungle of Peru. It is called civet and can also be found in India, Vietnam, among other countries. I went there in December-January 2019.
What does this cute little animal do? It feeds on ripe coffee fruits and defecates them partially digested. The internal coffee bean is not digested, but it seems that it is chemically modified by the enzymes present in the stomach of the civet, which add flavor to the coffee, and a particular taste.
These coffee beans are collected by coffee growers in the area and they are roasted. Today this type of coffee, called Kopi Luwak is the most expensive in the world, and demanded in the most supper-scale restaurants in the world, especially in the United States and Japan. The kilo costs approximately 400 euros, that is, about 200times!!! more expensive than a kilo of Arabic coffee in Peru (the most common type).
I was surprised and intrigued by this information! I hope you liked the story, guys!
Ummm, of course, I know and have tried it. But I can’t believe it is worth. Actually it is a very unique coffee and the story is interesting but I like more general coffee:-)
@HiroyukiTakisawa me too, I am too classic I think but still, it´s very nice to find out about different methods, processes related to coffee have an awesome day my friend!
Hi @marcorp yes my friend. I agree with you. I read one day about this strange animal in a magazine. the famous Starbucks has this kind of Coffee in the Display. When you enter, you can see a small bags filled of this coffee and the Animal picture attached. In the beginning, I didn’t believe the story, later I assured…
I’ve long wanted to try the famous Kopi Luwak @marcorp , but as you say it’s extremely expensive and only very few places even sell it. At least in Europe.
I did have a chance to try it at a restaurant not too long ago, but a single cup cost more than the entire bill we’d accumulated at the time, so I decided to pass.
I think I’ll just have to go for it at some point and consider it an experience, but I want to make sure I get it in a place that knows how to properly make it.
