Close a Connect Post

I’ve tried to close off a post by adding a comment at the end that explains why I’ve closed the post and that I will not respond further but it seems that some Local Guides just don’t read this comment or understand it and continue adding to it and the more that do the more that others don’t see my closing comment and so on it goes. I’m thinking of creating a special image with words that try to stop this but before I devote time to this can anyone tell me how I can close a Connect post to stop further comments being added to that post?

Hello @AdamGT ,

There is no way for a user to close a thread; that sort of goes against the entire purpose of a discussion forum.

If you are done with a thread and don’t wish to participate anymore, you can unsubscribe from it in order to ignore it. Use the Options drop-down to unsubscribe from threads.

Hello @AdamGT

Even if you put up a banner, still users will continue to add comments and tag you to respond. A tag still generates a notification even after we unsubscribe from anything.

However, moderators can lock a post to prevent users from adding further comments. I see that happening with the “container posts” type threads, frequently.

You can request and check that feasibility.

Thanks for your reply @Flash and yes I realize that there is no way for a user to close a thread and that’s really why I posted my question here. While I do appreciate that closing a post goes against the purpose of a discussion forum, there are exceptions when that specific discussion has logically ended or has moved on to another thread! As mentioned by @C_T this does happen and mods close off certain posts. BTW the thread I wish to close is one I started so it’s no good me unsubscribing from it. The reason for wanting to close it is that it is now superseded by a new thread. Leaving messages indicating that the old thread is closed and redirecting fellow Local Guides to the new thread isn’t working as they are continuing to leave messages there when they should be doing this on the new thread! Given that I can’t close the old thread, I ask that you as a moderator do so as it would save some frustration. Thanks for your help.

I could report it as inappropriate and see if they remove it, lol!

Hello @Flash ,

Many Beginner LGs create a post for testing purpose and I have attended many calls from such LGs. I request our @AdamGT to place this feature in our ‘Idea Board’.

I feel - if not today, after a huge number of irrelevant posts get accumulated, you will have to implement this.

Of course, this can be a feature to support LGs with the help of Google Or Connect Moderators - what do you say @C_T ?

Regards to all

Hello @TravellerG

Need to lock a post to prevent further comments would be a very rare incident. Let’s hope the moderators would support such a request.

Further, I find the forum encourages newcomers and incredibly tolerates inferior posts. (Except for plagiarism). The expectation is to facilitate such users by guiding them on how to do things correctly. That enhances the “Connections” i.e. the basic purpose of the forum. Hence, let the practice of creating posts for testing purposes continue unhindered.

I doubt that that’s the way to go @Aeroscout . There’s nothing inappropriate about the post / thread it’s just that we don’t want to allow for any further comments to be added so I think the only approach that’s worth trying is that suggested by @TravellerG .

@AdamGT , sorry for that delayed response.

Just because you start the thread does not mean that you cannot unsubscribe from it.

Additionally, if you wish to update the figures you’re providing, there is no reason why you cannot do that in the same thread.

I know I have a lot of trouble navigating some sites and I don’t know that some forums are super strict on their etiquette guidelines. Someone was way rude about how he checked me on it too one time.

I think maybe a stop sign since its universally known as stop with a kind character that says “Say No More!!” Or " The end" or “Fin” . You are awesome. Have a great day!

Thanks for your reply @Flash however I can’t see how either of the two suggestions you make would work in my case.

Hello again @AdamGT ,

You have stated that you realize that closing posts goes against the purpose of a discussion forum. That would mean you understand that it’s necessary to keep posts open for people to comment on those posts. I thus don’t see why you’d be asking to close posts because you are done with them; that doesn’t mean others are done with that post and that they should not have the oppurtunity to comment if they like.

The issue here seems to be that you’re creating a new post when one already exists. If your issue is that this is a single topic and thus you’d like everyone to be commenting in one place; the solution is to not create duplicate posts. Both the Connect moderators and Google moderators spend a lot of time combining posts that cover the same topic; it is proper edicate to keep a conversation about a topic in one post rather than creating new ones.

Hi @Flash

My hunch is that perhaps I have not made myself clear so please bare with me while I try to give you a better explanation. As you will know here on Connect we have a series of monthly Introduce Yourself posts. For example we had the Introduce Yourself - November and Introduce Yourself - December posts, and similarly we had Introduce Yourself posts for the many months before these. Using your argument these posts should not be marked Read Only to disallow others the opportunity to comment if they like!! However, if you visit each of these past Introduce Yourself posts you will see that they have in fact been marked as Read Only and I don’t think I need to explain the reason why this is so. My posts that I previously mentioned are similar to these posts and as in this example, writing closing comments on these to try to direct fellow Local Guides doesn’t work, and I’ve tried different approaches! Some continue to leave comments and become frustrated when I do not act or respond to them. In these instances, it would be better to allow the post author to write a closing comment giving the reader clear direction and then marking the post as Read Only.

Hello again @AdamGT ,

As I have previously stated, users of the forum are asked to not create a new thread for an already existing topic.

Google is the owner of the forum, not a user; I’m afraid the threads to which you refer are not examples of how users are to use the forum.

Please do observe the rules of Connect and keep topics to a single thread.
