Have you ever heard about “Cerro Ventana” in Cordoba province, with a triangle-shaped window? It is in the province of Cordoba, in the Valley of Traslasierra, just in front of Los Hornillos, a small village that is 22 km / 13.67 miles from Mina Clavero, the touristic and commercial city of this area. We were willing to climb this mountain of 2,340 metres / 7.767 miles without a guide, although we respect those who feel better accompanied with a guided tour.
This was our challenge: 1) Finding our way without getting lost, 2) Reaching the top by midday, 3) Completing the hike before dark. Our aim was to see the whole Traslasierra Valley and Los Molinos Dam from the “window” which is at top.
The trail is marked by piles of stones and painted rocks, but sometimes they are a bit hidden… So, as I mentioned earlier, the challenge is to follow the trail and find it again when you feel that you have got off the way or the trail seems to have disappeared.
As beautiful as the top is the Forest of Tabaquillos, made up of a protected native tree species that exists in very few areas of the country. This forest is about half way up the mountain. It appears to be there on purpose to protect you from the sun and let you have a break. You can also enjoy the birds than come close to you and ask for some food.
I highly recommend doing this hiking trail. Don´t forget to take at least 4 litres / 1.05 gallons of water per person, some dried or fresh fruits and a couple or more sandwiches for the day.
