Hello LG family,
I’m Shaheen Gul from Karachi, and a local guide level 6.
First of all, I want to say Happy Independence day to both neighbouring countries Pakistan & India because we are celebrating our big day almost on the same day.
So, this year we decided to celebrate our independence day in a different style, by spreading an awareness message to all karachiites, and of course to the people of Pakistan as well.
Karachi has a huge sea belt, which starts from Keti Bunder Thatta to the beaches of Gwadar & Pasni. But we can feel a major difference between the water quality at these beaches in Karachi, and out of Karachi.
This is just like the big difference between polluted, less polluted, and unpolluted.
The famous picnic spot for the whole of Pakistan in Karachi is Clifton Beach, its interesting to know that whenever you will talk to a Pakistani, who never visited Karachi, if you ask him/her, that where you want to visit first in Karachi, their answer always will be “Clifton Beach”
But, maybe not many people know that now the beach of Karachi is much polluted by the sewerage water, which is coming from three sides, and finally, it goes and mixes directly with ocean water.
Today, on 14th August, for sure a big day for every Pakistani, we tried to convey a message of Awareness. I heard a lot from my friend and mentor @KashifMisidia about theClean the World campaignby @ErmesT and read many articles about it on Connect by him and other local guides from around the world. So I decided to do something similar in my city too
We reached Clifton beach at 5:00 pm, which was the peak time for the people who were visiting here with their friends and families.
We brought some bags and gloves with us, for what we were demonstrating there.
There are eight people, including my family and friends. We took our bags and began to pick up plastic and other waste from the beach, which was of course abandoned by the people who came here for picnics and hangouts and didn’t bring their waste with them. It was so sad to see that syringes and other medical waste were also on the beach, and no one can imagine how harmful this stuff is for our marine life. Because if no one will pick these things from the beach, they will surely go to the sea, and maybe marine creatures will eat these things as food.
The best thing we got there, was there were a lot of kids, who were playing in sewerage water,
without knowing where they were. After they learned this from me, Not only did they come out of there but they took an interest in helping us to clean that part of the beach. This was a big achievement for us because probably many people there who got this message from our actions and probably they will not do it again what they did to pollute the sea, but the kids who joined us with their all excitement, they will learn a great message from our activity and will never forget.
