(CL2019 RECAP): When everyone speaks the same language

When you bring together 200 Local Guides from 64 different countries, different backgrounds, and native languages, it is natural that you need a lingua franca for everyone to understand each other. Therefore, speaking English is a mandatory requirement to attend Connect Live. However, more than a common language, what brought us together was an incredible energy.

Over the past five months, I’ve been very active on both Local Guides Connect and Telegram unofficial groups, have participated in and hosted virtual meetups. I have even been nominated “Connect Live Attendee of The Week” (Thanks again @LuisMGonzalez, for the nomination @DeniGu for the amazing text, and the Local Guides Team for choosing me). As a result, I had met virtually many people who, in person, are even more amazing. On the other hand, I also met people that I had never chatted before and who are also incredible. Even though they are not so active on Connect (sure, they will be now), they are also amazing and had made significant contributions to Google Maps in different ways. Now, it’s easier to understand that Google Local Guides Team finds something special in each attendee

During the conference, we had the opportunity to come face to face with Googlers, ask questions, come up with ideas, suggestions, and give feedback about Google Maps and the Local Guides Program. Even the craziest ideas we came up with were kindly and honestly received. It was essential to know that I was being heard.

One of my favorite parts of Connect Live was Wednesday’s Breakout Session. We were in a room with few people and were able to come up with suggestions and learn more. I was able to understand more about the purpose of Local Guides Connect, and I’m very excited by the news that will come out.

I also really enjoyed the opportunities for interaction with the Googlers both in the sessions created for this purpose, during the reception and closing parties and in the breaks for breakfast, brunch, snack, dinner, etc. (No one can complain that they got hungry, LOL). So, I want to thank the Local Guides Team, especially @TraciC and @brittym, for preparing such a fantastic event.

I’ll bring friends for a lifetime. #TeamBrazil was awesome, and I would like to mention here everyone. As the tags are limited, I want everyone to feel represented by @sanchestom and Cauê (unfortunately, I don’t know his Connect Name). Tom made his first international trip (actually, it was his first flight) and made the most of it (in fact, he’s still traveling). Tom was the first Local Guide that I met online, and Cauê was a local guide that we just met in San Jose, but quickly join us a Team.

About the international team, I would need a lot of tags (just #TeamItalia and “Los Latinos” would me cost dozens of tags), besides, of course, the tremendous Local Guides from North America, Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Asia, and the Aussies (oi, oi, oi).

However, I could not fail to name @Cecilita and @Jesi , "mi hermanas” from Argentina, whom I hope to see very soon, in Brazil, Argentina, or anywhere in the world. Each in their way, they are smart, super-acting as Local Guides and amazing people.

Connect Live has really connected us!

Thank you very much!

See you around!

My dear friend @AlexandreCampbell !!

Again… as it happened 2 seconds ago with the posts of @pacomorett and @Julien44 you made me cry! Again!!

I think I spent with you and @Jesi the best trip I ever had. We had a lot of fun singing “La cucaracha” walking all over San Francisco. We had a lot of laughs “running away from the wolves” near the Golden Gate and we almost died laughing trying to find you behind that giant tree in Muir Woods to take that picture.

But for sure the best part arrived the second week, once the Connect Live really started and we were involved in all those conferences and meetings and meet-ups and breakfasts, lunchs, dinners and parties. Learning a lot of interesting things, knowing so many googlers and local guides and having so much fun.

As you say… for sure we will meet very soon and we will sing again La cucaracha toghether. ?

Hi @AlexandreCampbell

Very very nice recap   .

It was good to meet you, your positive energy and your fun. I feel recharged and it is also because of you.

I hope we have the opportunity to meet again. I am not worried about it.

@Cecilita thank you but now you have put the song la cucaracha in my mind:woozy_face::woozy_face::woozy_face:. Hopefully it won’t last too long  .

@Julien44 @Cecilita this song just grows on you. Cecilia has this project where she want people to sing it and send her the video. :slightly_smiling_face: i am seriously considering that.

@AlexandreCampbell I don’t have any issues being Brazilian :slightly_smiling_face: thanks for sharing your good times with us. I must appreciate that you do read a lot about cultures. The knowledge you have about India and other countries is really good. I had good times with you during connect but it was post connect in SF when we really get to spend some quality time. And i know that you are the main culprit behind this lacucaracha thing  @Cecilita

Hi my dear friend @AlexandreCampbell,

very nice recap with heart touching feeling. You are a great person and I’m very honored and pleased having meeting you and having a new friend in Brazil. It has been an amazing week and we had really good time together, and of course with the whole #TeamBrazil as it was one big family.

I really hope to see you again somewhere, thank you very much!

I’m adding this group selfie, remember? This is when we met first time at our first dinner in SJ.

Thank you @AlexandreCampbell for this recap! I appreciate your energy during all the phases of the meeting! Looking forward to see you here in Italy! And remember that from Paris the easy way to reach Italy without a flight is with a BUS!

@AlexandreCampbell as you can imagine I am also crying while singing LA CUCARACHA in my mind. You are an amazing human (stealing this expression from @PaulPavlinovich ) and you made my ConnectLive experience even better (if that could be possible). When I did my recap over the phone to my 80 years old dad (respecting the NDA, of course) the first thing I mentioned was the fact that thanks to Bossa Nova we had this amazing bond and I even mentioned to him that many times we started singing in Portugues some MPB’s classics. Thank you for your friendship, wish you all the best and hope we will see you again. Remember, mi casa es tu casa.

BTW, where are the multiple selfies that you made of us?

@LuisMGonzalez , meu amigo, so glad to read your words. Your passion of Brazilian Music, your energy and your smile are contagious. This is one of the photos that I’m proud to have with you. During the weekend I’ll try to organize my files (I took photos using two smartphones and a câmera, so it’s a mess, rs). Hope to see you again soon! Mi casa é su casa!

In order to make this post trilingual, te dedico essa canción brasileña de Milton Nascimento, perfecta a esa ocasión:

Canção da América:

Amigo é coisa para se guardar
Debaixo de sete chaves
Dentro do coração
Assim falar na canção que na América ouvi
Mas quem cantava chorou
Ao ver o seu amigo partir…

@LuigiZ , you are the king of selfies (BTW, thank you very much for that, you registered almost everything), but this one is mine. You are one of the persons that I’d like to know because virtually you had already shown be a fantastic guy. However, you are even funnier, more enjoyable, and friendly in person. I’m very honored to have met you.
