Christmas in my city Lagos

Christmas decorations of Eko hotel round about by Zenith Bank 2022

The earliest feel of Christmas in my city Lagos is usually the decoration of Ajose Adeogun streets of Victoria island by Zenith Bank (one of the foremost banks in Nigeria) early in November annually. The headquarters of Zenith bank and several branches and subsidiaries of the bank are on the street, so street is sometimes called Zenith Bank street.

Truth be told, the decorations on that street is by far more sophisticated than any other Christmas decoration in Lagos. In fact in December 2019, popular American rapper Cardi B also seized the opportunity of her trip to Nigeria to take some photos around the street.

While I enjoyed reading the google festive traditions round the globe, I got some chills remembering the good old day and how Christmas traditions have evolved overtime.

Christmas in Nigeria in the 80s and 90s

Christmas used to be exciting and the earliest sign of Christmas for most kids back then was parents taking our measurement for cloth and shoes as early as September/October presiding the Christmas. In fact foot measurements used to be taken by our moms with broomstick, with extra allowance for the possible growth in size from time of purchase to Christmas when we were to rock the shoes. My siblings and I would make paper flowers, beautifully colored for our living room about a week to Christmas. On the d-day we would go to church early enough. On our return, it’s very likely that we are welcomed with good jellof rice meal and plenty of proteins as never during the regular course of the year. We would watch some movies on our black and white Television and then go visiting our relatives and family friends who would gift us mint currencies (the best part of the day) . There was always exchange of food between neighbors and close by friends and relatives, not to forget the exchange of Christmas greeting cards. The sound of fireworks and knockouts often fill the nights from Christmas Eve to the new year.

Present day Christmas in Nigeria

Although some of the good old traditions of returning back to ones origin town/village, gifting and meal sharing still remain till date, there are far newer ways of celebration the festivities these days. Christmas trees and lighting decorations are not readily available to all in different sizes and quality depending on means. People look for fun places to go to, Beaches, Christmas concerts, fancy restaurants, Christmas fun and games villages, cinemas and so on. There is still the fireworks but in selected areas. Greeting cards have since been substituted with mobile phone messages and digital cards. I will not forget to mention that unlike what it used to be, these days everything is usually very expensive during the yuletide

@MrFreez Thank you for sharing about Christmas in Lagos. I love that story of how your parents would take your feet measurements with a broom stick.
I was wondering, would you like to have your post added to my worldwide #ChristmasInMyCity 2022 challenge? https://www.localguidesconnect.com/t5/General-Discussion/World-wide-ChristmasInMyCity-2022-challenge/td-p/3521258 I’m on a quest to compile stories from around the world about Christmas.

Thanks for sharing. Christmas decorations have become a thing in major cities thanks to some companies and CSR.

It is a lovely sight to see them at night and what a time to see such illuminations at Christmas!? :evergreen_tree: :tada:

This is a beautiful read, I visited Omu Resort and I really loved it. I have seen some really nice decorations around ikoyi, maybe on my way back from Mass at Falomo tomorrow, I will take photos ofnthe decor. The decor is outstanding. I don’t know if it matches the grandeur of the one at Ajose Adeogun though. @MrFreez

Thabks for sharing and for the beautiful memories

Would be nice to see photos from Falomo road and maybe your “enjoymentation” at Omu resort ( I haven’t visited there yet though.)

Tell me @Ewaade_3A was were your feets measured with broomstick? Were your Christmas clothes bought oversized?

No, my Christmas clothes were never bought oversize. My Mum is hot! She is a fashionista. I hope you meet her some day.

My foot was measured with Broom.

Hmmm…

Just tell me what you want to know about Omu Resort, basically it is an Animal-themed Amusement Park/resort. They want you to think of the Animals eith every step you take!

We have them alive; both plants and animals; Think aquatic life, Think wild animals, huge birds, amphibians, even thr King of the Jungle…

You move from there and go to the Park! Where you habe all sorts of rides, shaped as dinosaurs, etc…

You have the huge water slides, the swings, a lot!

There is so much to do than one could complete a whole day…

I would share some photos with you…

@MrFreez

Thanks for asking; Mr. Pato of LA La

This is a FANTASTIC Christmas post! Thanks for sharing @MrFreez you’ve given me a great deal of insight into Nigerian traditions. I’m also impressed at the scale of holiday lights and festivities on Zenith Bank Street… I’m not sure I’ve even seen something like that in the US?! Great post and thank you, again, for sharing. Keep these great posts coming.

Wonderful story @MrFreez One of the most marvelous thing to be in this community is to learn about customs and traditions straight from those persons who live there. I can feel your nostalgic for the old times.

Let me suggest that you edit the article to enlarge your beautiful cover photo so that it can be better appreciated.

Thank you very much @Mikeinthefalls . Christmas used to be a time to look forward to growing up, with the whole fanfare and love. A lot has changed, but it’s still Christmas  . I’m please you like the content of my post.

 thank you @SilvyC . You are very observant as you seem to be the only one that noticed my nostalgic for the way things used to be. I like to bask in the present while still holding the past with some reverence.
Suggestion we’ll noted, hopefully I would do a little bit more on the story.
