Christmas for me always involves cooking and baking for my family and friends. We traditionally make a gingerbread house, but this year we decided to make cookies instead.
In Australia we celebrate Christmas in summer, so I always do my baking early in the morning or late at night when it is cooler. Generally everyone else is asleep, so I find this time very peaceful and relaxing.
I begin the process by mixing a dough rich in spices including ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves and cardamon. This dough is then rolled and cookie cutters are used to create Christmas shapes. As they bake, wonderful scents fill our home and bring Christmas to life.
The next step involves decorating the cookies. This could be done with many things including nuts, dried fruits or even flowers! We use lollies (sweets) and lots of them! I love the way kids try to fit as much icing and as many lollies onto each cookie as they possibly can.
Step 3 is the best part - eating and enjoying these spicy biscuits with family and friends!
I was inspired to write this post after reading @ErmesT post about the different nativity scenes in Italy. Also, this post is part of @Velvel#LGChristmasChallenge2020. @KarenVChin I know your kids made some amazing gingerbread houses too!
How did you celebrate Christmasthis year? I encourage you to share a post of your experiences too. You still have time to post until 1st January 2021.
The ham was done in the hooded BBQ over about 2 hours. We had two lamb shoulders on the spit and a turkey in the oven @JustineE lots of people to be fed.
Your children are so detailed, @JustineE ! I love that you decided to take the cookie route when houses are the standard, and homemade is definitely the way to go.
Have been doing a fair bit of baking this month myself and it’s going to be hard to ween off the cookies .
Hope you have a wonderful holiday season and happy new year!
Hi @Velvel . The cookies took about an hour and a half to make and bake. That’s because it is so hot here the dough needs to be refrigerated in between. Kids decorated them the next day which took about half an hour. Have you ever made gingerbread?
Hello my friend @SP31 ! So nice to connect with you again. Yes, I think lots of people have taken up baking during COVID. Comfort food and all that We had a busy Christmas, catching up with friends for lunch and then dinner, but it was absolutely lovely. Great food, great company. What more can you ask for? How was your Christmas?
Happy holidays to you and your family. Thank you for sharing your Christmas baking activity with us, that looks super fun!
I would like to inform you that I am relabeling the topic label of your post to Food & Drink, to keep Connect organized, since you’re content is about your baking activity.
Love the seasonal drinks from Starbucks @Velvel Unfortunately I don’t have a Starbucks where I live, but I did try a mint hot chocolate from a local cafe recently. I also had a peppermint mocha at Starbucks last year in San Francisco.
How awesome @jayasimha78 . I think it is such lovely thing to do as a family. Did you eat it on Christmas Day or before? My kids always loved breaking it apart after Christmas lunch.
@JustineE absolutely cannot go wrong with great food and company, very happy to hear it was quite festive and enjoyable! Although limited, time was spent visiting my parents (who don’t live far) and exchanging gifts, etc . Quiet Christmas but thankful to be celebrating nonetheless. Happy new year!
