Chocolate Cake - Part of My Quarantine Cooking

Hello Local Guides,

This lockdown period is boon for many of us, who are novice in cooking. I’m sure you all must be honing your cooking skills and making some awesome dishes.

We are also seeing some Birthdays, Anniversaries, etc. of our loved ones and that’s what is giving us the golden chance to make some unique & phenomenal items - apart from the regular ones.

The same happened with me. My sister’s birthday came up last month (May 2020) and she assigned me the task to make a cake for her. Certainly, I had no option as all the bakery shops were closed. All I could do was to gather the ingredients from here & there and make the cake myself.

I took the help from my mother and referred some recipes online. I decided to go with an eggless cake with the steaming process (no baking). With much efforts, I was able to arrive at this final outcome. :yum:

Here, I would like to share the ingredients used my me to make this cake:

  1. Curd

  2. Sugar

  3. Vanilla Extract

  4. Oil

  5. Plain Flour (Maida)

  6. Cocoa Powder

  7. Baking Powder

  8. Baking Soda

  9. Salt

  10. Milk

  11. Butter

  12. Heavy Cream

  13. Nuts, Gems, Cookies (For garnishing)

Let’s understand the process:

  1. Whisk & Mix curd, sugar and vanilla extract. Dissolve sugar in it. Add half cup oil and whisk smoothly.

  1. Add Plain Flour (Maida), Cocoa Powder, Baking Powder, Baking Soda, and a pink of salt. Sieve this mixture and mix well with the earlier prepared paste. Properly cut & fold.

  1. Transfer this mixture to a cake tin.

  1. Cover this with an aluminium foil and then place it in a steamer. Steam for about 60-70 minutes. You will get the result cake like this:

  1. Then prepare a chocolate layer paste covering separately. Use Butter, Powdered Sugar, Cocoa Powder, Heavy Cream and Vanilla Extract here. Whisk for 1 minute. You will get a thick creamy frosting.

  1. Now spread this creamy chocolate over the steamed cake.

  1. Now, decorate your cake as you like. I used nuts, Gems chocolate, and some cookies.

I realized one thing in this whole process is that Cooking is really FUN. I would like to learn more and cook more …

I would like to tag @FalguniP here, and I’m sure she would give some nice feedback about it. :grinning: :sunglasses:

Kudos for writing this post, @Tushar18 ! The cake looks truly delicious!

It is the first time I hear you can actually prepare a cake without baking it! How long did it take you to prepare the cake? By the looks of it I can say that your sister must have loved the cake you prepared.

If I was near such a cake, I am sure it would disappear instantly.

I am also tagging @RadieN as I know she is very much into cooking and might have tried preparing something similar?

All my family members love to eat chocolate cake. Though we did not try it yet to make the cake at home, but this post inspires me to that. Thanks a lot @Tushar18 for sharing nice post with many amazing images and easy recipes.

What a nice chocolate cake @Tushar18 Thanks for sharing. I’m sure your sister was very happy with her brother’s creation :+1:t2:

Could we say that this no egg cake is the same with vegan cake? Nah, I’m interested in trying the taste of it as @FalguniP has ever showed me a vegan cake during my virtual meetup

Wow…! the cake definitely looks delicious and especially since this was your first attempt at making a cake, it has come out nicely.

Steaming is a new thing I have heard about making a cake, and I like the decoration - simple yet attractive.

Thanks for sharing the ingredients and the recipe @Tushar18

Hi @SarveswarB ,

You have also prepared the cake well and decorated nicely in a circular pattern. During cooking, I too realized that we have to handle this cake very gently, so that it does not break down.

You can prepare again if you think you can make a better one. Good luck dear !!!

Hi @Tushar18 ,

Thank you so much for sharing your recipe and thank you @TsekoV for the tag! I’ve also never heard of making a steamed sponge layer for a cake. I have almost no experience in making desserts, but I’d love to try this recipe some day.

And happy belated birthday to your sister! Hope you had an awesome celebration with this delicious cake.

Hi @TsekoV ,

Thank you very much for your kind words.

Yes, this part of steaming the cake is equivalent to the baking process. Well, I’m very much new into this cooking field and never baked cake or anything else. So, I’m not aware how much it is different. I just followed what my mother instructed me to do. :grinning:

It took us around 2-2.5 hours in the whole process. Yes, she loved the cake very much and fortunately, it came out to be a nice one. :joy:

I would love to see the cake or something else you cooked. I’m sure you must be expert in cooking. :grinning:

I am glad you enjoyed it, @Tushar18 . :cake:

Honestly I am not very skilled at cooking and preparing desserts actually requires some skills. What I am good at is tasting all kinds of cakes and sweet things. I don’t mind doing that, he-he-he.

Hello @FalguniP ,

Glad that you like it. I was waiting for your response. I was afraid earlier how it would come out eventually at last, but thank god it didn’t get disastrous. :grinning:

Seems you are asking me to prepare an Idli Cake as the next recipe. :joy:

Yes @FalguniP , cooking something for the breakfast is a unique idea.

“Poori” is something I really like, but I’m doubtful about the frying process. I’ve heard its not so easy.

I can try making “Paranthas”, which is really popular here in Delhi - may be with Potato or Paneer stuffing. :yum:

Yes, it was a new experience for me too as I made the cake first time. I really enjoyed the process, although even little things were to be observed.

Thank you very much for your wishes. Yes, she enjoyed this cake very much - more so by the surprise. :grinning:
