Chidambaram

Chidambaram is a temple town situated in the Indian State of Tamil Nadu. This town is known for the magnificent temples of Lord Nataraja, Lord Govindaraja and Goddess Kali.

Chith (wisdom) + Ambalam (temple) = Chitambalam has become Chidambaram in vernacular usage.

Lord Nataraja performs the Cosmic Dance in this temple which was once surrounded by Thillai trees (Exocoeria Agallocha). Lord Govindaraja (a form of Lord Maha Vishnu) is also present within the same temple offering darshan to devotees.

There are several unique attributes to this temples. It is said that Chidambara Rahasya (Cosmic Secret) is something which is kept in confidence by the select yogis and gurus.

Lord Nataraja is the family deity of the medievel Chola Kings who had Chidambaram as their State Capital for a long time before King Raja Raja Chola moved it to Thanjavur where he built the famous Big Temple or Lord Brihadeeswara Temple (UNESCO Heritage site).

Lord Nataraja unlike in other temples is both the main deity (Moolavar) and also the festival deity (Ursavar).

A huge Siva Ganga water tank serves the water needs of the temple.

Accommodation facilities are below in this temple town.

A good alternative could be “Lakshmi Vilas Heritage Hotel” which is situated 15 kilometers away from Chidambaram.
