Chembittapalli
One of the oldest Mosque in Kerala, it was built between 1520 and 1540. It is housed in a protected heritage building and represents the traditional architectural style of Kerala.Chempittappali , built between1520 and 1540, located in the Kochangadi area of Mattancherry.
It is one of the oldest mosques in Kochi. The land was gifted by the king of Kochi to build the church. Syed Maulana Bukhari, a native of Kavarathi in Lakshadweep, was the main person behind the construction of the mosque. The name Chempitta Palli is derived from the Malayalam word chemp meaning copper.
The outer ceiling of the mosque is covered with copper sheets. So the church got its name from its structure. It is now a protected heritage building. A community o Muslims called ‘Naina’ are closely related to the Chempitta Mosque. Nainas pray in this mosque and they have exclusive rights in the functioning of the mosque.the Nainars came to Kochi from Nineveh centuries ago,
The name Naina is derived from Nineveh, a place in Arabia.Another strand of such narratives says that they carry the legacy of Kunjali Marakar, the great warrior who fought against the Portuguese. This mosque is built in Kerala architectural style.
