Montreal is one of the most creative cities in the world. With murals and graffiti in every corner of the city, it’s not difficult to see why Montreal is considered as an artist’s paradise.
If you need someone to watch over you, who better than #LeonardCohen? Leonard Cohen was a musician, poet and painter born in Montreal. This mural painted on a facade of 21 floors is a tribute to the poet, it was made by one of the greatest portraitist muralists in the world.
Some Murals actually have a historic purpose as they paid tribute to iconic figures.
For example the Mural of Daisy Peterson Sweeny captures her spirit, her heart, her kindness, her generosity. Sweeney was a pillar of Montreal’s black community. Sweeney’s image is immortalized on the walls of the community she loved so much. It is located at the corner of St-Jacques and St-Martin streets.
Last year, during the Black History Month, murals showcasing some well-known figures, but also some less familiar faces who will remind you that the Black community’s contributions are made everyday and in many spheres were gathered. The following is a mural of Jackie Robinson by Montreal artist and founder of A’Shop, Fluke. Jack Roosevelt Robinson was an American professional baseball player who became the first African American to play in Major League Baseball. He played with the Montreal Royals.

Every year there is also the international public art festival bound to the celebration of creativity and the democratization of urban art. The festival MURAL transforms for a week the Saint-Laurent Boulevard into a real open-air museum where local and international artists will unite their talents in the most creative manners.
This year the MURAL festival will take place from June 6 to 16, 2019. Discover all the Murals since 2013 here.
There is also a secret world in our city !!! I am talking about the rooftop murals: the “Sleeping Giants” of Montreal. These are the creation of the French street artist duo Ella and Pitr, from the city of Saint-Etienne, creators of the largest outdoor mural in the world.
There are at least 13 giants taking a snooze around the city, but exact locations of where you can find the monsters aren’t publicly shared, as the whole point of the project is to get out into the world and to not leave any stone unturned.
Take the time to find these magnificent creatures that are right under our noses!
There are so many festivals in Montreal even during the Winter, for example, learn more here about “Nuit Blanche” the most awaited night (festival) of the year in Montreal. Thank you Local Guide @PatrickBalyan .
