Chatusmukhi Stepwell, Situated near Gopi Talav, Surat, Gujarat, India
During my visit to Gujarat, I had the opportunity to see many stepwells, like Adalaj, Bai or Dada Harir, Helical stepwells etc.
After entering the security gate of Gopi Talav which is the major attraction of Surat city, I saw an ancient structure, which made my mind happy. This structure is a beautiful stepwell which is called Chatusmukhi stepwell.
It’s having four arched entrances and steps leading to the water from all the four directions. The history of stepwells is associated with the Indus Valley and Mohenjodaro. This method of water conservation has been an integral part of the culture.
This stepwell made of stone represents an example of Islamic architecture. Ornamental work has also been done and there are also ornamented niches. Arabic inscriptions are recorded on both sides of the arches which cannot be easily read.
Central aquifer is circular just at the centre of the square. All four pathways or steps are merged through arches in this central aquifer. It was built probably during the reign of Mahmud Shah III in 1510 to 1515 AD. This is completely open to the sky.
It’s an attraction for those who wish to understand the water legacy and its architecture. Of course it’s unique in design.
