Yesterday, after 5 weeks of staying indoors, the residents of the most populous city in Nigeria were finally allowed to move freely in their city but with very strict conditions! Among which were;
- You must wear a nose and mouth covering when you are out in Public
- You must keep a 2-meter distance from the next even on a Public bus
- Non-essential commodities market open from 9a.m. to 3p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays
These are the major ones that concern me. It was a Speech with over 48 points by the President, please do not blame me.
IMPLICATIONS
- VEHICULAR AND PEDESTRIAN TRAFFIC: It was like Pandemonium struck in the city of Lagos yesterday! Neither the āCOVID-19 social distancing ruleā, nor the ā150 feet driving distance ruleā could be obeyed as both ācars and peopleā went neck to neck in a bid to get their supplies before the market closed!
- HIKE IN PRICES OF GOODS: the borders and the airports are closed. So, the few available goods had to be sold to the highest bidder and those who already had stock had to increase their prices, as their goods that were coming into the country could not be cleared
- PANIC: Even though everyone was eager to be out, up and about again! Someone simply sneezing could make a place desolate within the twinkle of an eye
- EXCHANGE RATE: For whatever reason, the naira to dollar exchange rate has gone up, throwing everyone into a state of panic especially for financial security.
- HIKE IN TRANSPORTATION FARE: because of the social distancing rule, the buses and āAutorickshawsā (Taxi) could not carry the required number of passengers, so the fare was increased for those willing to pay by as much as 200%
Itās a good thing that the lockdown measures have been relaxed. Now, we can āWalk and Workā, but is the current situation sustainable?
All I kept saying to myself yesterday was; "life is difficult for the poor" but there is just so much one can do and with limited resourcesā¦
