Cenotaph of Vir Singh Deo, Orchha.

View of Cenotaph of Vir Singh Deo also known as Bir Singh Judeo, Orchha, Madhya Pradesh, India.

The rule of VIR SINGH DEO 1605-1627 A.D. is regarded as the Golden era in the annals of the Bundela Dynasty. He built the grand majestic buildings such as Jahangir Mahal, Phool Bagh, Laxminarayan Temple, Hammam, Naubat Khana etc. The Cenotaph of Vir Singh Deo was built by his son Jujhar Singh in 1627-1628 AD. This three storeyed Cenotaph is built on the Bank of River Betwa on an elevated square platform. The cremation site is under a square shaped chamber in the middle which can be accessed from all the four directions. Each floor was built with balconies most of which are lost. River water or flow touches the base of the platform during the rainy season. This is one of the finest example of Bundela and Mughal architecture.

Your post is great! The cenotaph looks well-maintained. Who takes care of it, and is it free to visit?

Hi Brother,

Thanks for your appreciation. Entry is not free but it’s affordable. It’s maintained by the Archaeological Department of Madhya Pradesh under a Commissioner.

Warm Wishes,

Rizwan
