My husband Fabio and I got married in june 2014. We are both scuba divers and choosing the Dominican Republic for our honney moon made a lot of sense. During our trip we agreed to never spend our anniversary in a country we had spent it before. So each year we should be in a different country for the celebration of another year together.
Colombia is a beautiful country in South America. It is culturally rich and naturally gorgeous. These are probably some of the reasons Fabio and I chose the Colombian Caribbean to be the destination of our first anniversary. At the time we were in Bogotá working on a project, so it was a short flight to San Andrés. Before we left, a couple of friends had told us that there was this small island called Providencia where every dive was a shark dive! We immediatelly knew where to go.
From San Andrés we took a catamaran to Providencia. It was the roughest ride I’ve ever taken. I think I was the only person not to vomit during this ride (before meeting my husband I had worked onboard cruiseships for 2 years). When we got there we found out there was the option of a very short flight for those who want to avoid getting seasick. Well, that piece of information was one breakfast too late for my husband.
Once on the island we left our bags in the hotel and rented a motorcycle (the best way to move around the island). We went for a ride looking for a dive shop where we could hire a local guide for the week of scuba diving. We ended up in a small shop (there aren’t many on the island) and had the most amazing instructor, Jorge, guiding us. From the first to the last dive we saw sharks on every single one of them. It was amazing!
