Celebrated on September 19, 2019
How will you be celebrating today?
- Have you heard of The curse of Oak Island? Located in Nova Scotia: It has become an incredible show about hidden treasure and years of mysteries! You can actually visit and tour the island where the Lagina Brother’s and crew will meet with civilians and answer questions about the island. Hidden treasure? Pirates? Ships buried under water? "Find out next week, on the Curse of Oak Island!" -This is a running joke, not an advertisement.
- Perhaps you are more of a Naval history fan. The United States was no stranger to piracy within our own people! The USS KIDD was no exception! The Fletcher-class destroyer can be found off the coast of Baton Rouge, Louisiana. You can tour the USS KIDD here. The USS KIDD was the only Naval Ship in the United States allowed to fly the Jolly Roger flag! William Kidd, you were such a trickster, matey!
- Dungeon Rock, in Massachusetts. Oh, a place close to my heart. Near where I grew up, the coast is riddled with piracy through decades of our American History. This place that looks like nothing more than a peaceful nature reserve, holds many mysterious secrets within the rocks! You can easily spend the entire day here just exploring the land!
- Plum Point in Bath, North Carolina was the settling home for the famous Blackbeard! Blackbeard, who’s real name was Edward Teach had settled in Bath. Though his days of retirement did not last long, he was later killed November 22, 1718 in Ocracoke, North Carolina. Afterwards his severed head became an iconic, yet gruesome ornament overlooking the southern Chesapeake Bay in Virginia. -This of course might be a lovely place to visit for older people and not children. However, to each their own!
There are many more locations through out North American and certainly all over the world. I hope you all take a moment to consider the fun in talking like a Pirate on September 19th, 2019 and perhaps even consider visiting a place of history! In celebration of this day, please share with others your places of interest on Piracy!
