🍩 Celebrate Fat Thursday in Poland

Two days ago we had in Poland great festivity called Fat Thursday. Imagine a day when you can eat as much donuts as you want and no one tell you anything because everybody are doing the same - eating  It’s associated with the celebration of Carnival. Traditionally it is a Christian feast marking the last Thursday before Lent. There is a local tradition that you have to eat one donuts at least, it guarantees richness, success and all the best in the whole year. People meet in their homes with their friends, colleagues and relatives and eat large quantities of sweets or cakes which they don’t eat during Lent. In Polish houses we also prepare Angel Wings called “faworki” - it’s very cripsy and sweet. It’s one of my favorite day, to be honest, cause you can eat as much sweets as you want :slightly_smiling_face:

What a day. These Polish donuts are taking my heart, I want to pick them up from your photo and taste them, I wish I could do so. Do you know that count, how many of these you ate that day?

@JustynaMad you have also mentioned the Angel Wings, can you please add some more details about it, or a picture too if possible.

Thank you for sharing.

@JustynaMad Thanks for sharing the picture and your insight!!!

Wow your pretty

Hi @JustynaMad

OMG these donuts look so yummy I’m already drooling here! :slightly_smiling_face: What are they made with? Are those some kind of nuts on top?

I loove donuts as well, especially Dunkin Donuts. They are just so soft and they have so many varieties to choose from. My favorites are chocolate and almond, or something with peanut butter.

Thanks! :slightly_smiling_face:

@DanniS They really are :slightly_smiling_face: We made it from flavour, fresh yeast, eggs, sugar, butter and milk, my grandma also adds a little spoon of spirit - very strong alcohol helps to make it more delicate. The most important part of the good donuts is of course delicious stuffing. I always choose a donut with real rose jam. In super market you can also find fake one and it’s taste hideously ;(

i only buy Donata. I love the polish once as they taste very healthy, but are not if you eat more than 3 per day

@TorM Have you tried “faworki”, we call it “chrust” as well ( “angel’s wings” in English )? I prefere them as they are not that sweet and my mum makes the best “faworki” in the entire World  :yum: :yum: :yum:

Wow… what a sweet and beautiful tradition @JustynaMad thanks for sharing.

You donuts are surely so great, especially with the additional alcohol :yum:

Does this tradition only apply for Christian or all of the Poland?

@Velvel I checked it and Wikipedia  says that it’s very typical for Poland BUT other countries also have their own version of Fat Thursday. In France it’s called Mardi Cras, in Russian - Maslenica, in UK - Pancake Tuesday, in Germany - Schmotziger Donnerstag. So as you can see a lot of countries find their own excuses to eat as much sweets as they can
