Myself @DavidBikkie and @MariaNgo were on a Christmas themed photo walk in the Melbourne CBD when we came across the Cathedral Arcade.
This arcade is the grand entrance for the Nicholas Building, built around the mid 1920’s.
The building houses several businesses and two were investigated by us. One was a retro clothes shop and the other a craft shop. Both were intriguing with what was offered for sale.
The stairwell has, unfortunately, has seen better days and some TLC with the tile wall tiles would do wonders visually.
The lift looks original but with updated electronics and a curiosity is the letter shute or tube with a letter posting slot on each floor.
Letters would be popped into the tube and fall into a collection box on the ground floor for collection by a postal official. Then these letters would be sorted at a post office for delivery.
On the ground floor there are four window displays with information about the construction and history of the Nicholas Building.
For the mildly adventurous with a camera this building and arcade is worth another visit. It is virtually a step back in time.
