As the world around us keeps changing, the need for categories to label places on Google Maps obviously keeps changing as well. So here is the next update in the overview I have been maintaining of the category changes the Maps team is making.
The image accompanying this post is not a random selection, but rather an attempt to attract the attention of @Denise_Barlock to inform her of the good news for the RV community: there is yet another new RV-related category: RV inspection service (we already saw RV detailing service pop up earlier this year).
The list of newly added categories this time has no particular focus (as used to be the case sometimes, like the time when loads of medical or asian stuff was added all at once). It’s just a mix of types of places, shops or services that have become more abundant recently. Like Asylum center - which unfortulately will most likely not become less abudant any time soon, given what is going on in several regions across the globe. Or Tattoo supply store: with tattoos being quite popluar, it makes sense that the tattoo artists need places to purchase their equipment and supplies.
Another constant when I am reporting on those new categories is that I have no clue what some of them are supposed to be used for. In this case: Seating systems provider and Smart locker manufacturer. No doubt these will be useful to some people in some industries, but I can’t really imagine what is meant here. (Feel free to enlighten me in the comments should you be operating in an industry where either of those is common).

Some category names have also been updated, seemingly to increase consistency ( 
) and clarity ( ). Some examples are Confectionery → Confectionery Store and School administrator → School administration office. You can find the full list on the webpage Sterling Sky provides.
On that same website you can also see which catgories have been removed. And that’s quite a long list this time. But I don’t think any of the removed categories will be greatly missed (do let me know in the comments if the opposite applies to you!). The bulk of the removed categories are education-related. I’m not really sure where the Google Maps team is heading, but there have been quite a few additions/changes/removals in that domain (especially with school types in particualr countries like France and Germany) - and probably they’re not finished yet.
Some of the removed categories were (near-)duplicates, so I fully agree that those are gone now. Think of Creche (there is Day care center, which is meant to be used for children as Adult day care center also exists as category) or Ophan asylum (as there is Orphanage). Other removed categories never made sense to me in the first place, e.g. Greco Roman Wrestling - what on earth was meant with that? A school? A place to practice the sports? A store to purchase the equipment (would have been quite a small store, though)? There still is Wrestling school available as category now. On the other hand there is also a missed consistency-opportunity here ( 
)… the category Freestyle wrestling is still there - and if you ask me that is as problematic as Greco Roman Wrestling used to be.
