🐌 caracoles 🐌 snails 🐌 escargots 🐌

Hola Local Guides del mundo!!

I have a question for you all! I am a big fan of snails and I would like to know where (places around the world) and how (salad, soup, stew, fried…) they are eaten, even if you do not actually like them you can contribute. I know they eat them in France, but I’ve never tried them anywhere else apart from France and Spain. I would really appreciate pics if you happen to have any.pics.

Thank you for your contributions

Here goes mine!

Hello @Laofdez ,

Thank you for sharing this photo with us, I love snails! In Morocco, where I grew up, the snail soup is very popular, and people eat it whenever they want. Some might say, it’s better to have it when it’s cold outside, but many eat it even during the summer.

Usually snails go out after rain and it’s the perfect time to collect them. The soup is made with so many ingredients, such as licorice and orange peels and has a unique flavor. Moreover, those who don’t like snails, they might drink only the soup, the hot liquid - simply amazing!

PS: I’m sharing with you a photo of a snail soup seller in Marrakesh.

@BorrisS Glad to find another snails fan around. Thank you for sharing the pic and the tradition. Here in Spain, we mainly eat snails in the south, Andalucía, and in the northeast, Cataluña. Some people like the small ones, which are mainly just boiled with mint and cayenne, and you can drink the soup, and some people prefer the medium ones, which are cooked differently depending on the area. My mum is from Andalucía and prepares them with a saucey rabbit stew with tomato, cherry peppers, onion, garlic, nuts, cayenne, ñora, mint, parsley… Mmmmmhhhh… We usually get them from my uncle, who lives in the country and has access to them. We eat them all year round, but there’s a time of the year when they reproduce and taste bitter, so we avoid them then. I think its round september and october, but I’m not sure.

Hello @Laofdez ,

Thank you for the details, I’ve really appreciated reading what you wrote. It remembered me the time when I was living in the south of France, more precisely in Perpignan. Due to the fact that, this area is considered Catalonia, I had the pleasure to taste snails. Honestly, the only thing that I remember is that they were in a thick green sauce. Was really good, but very different from the Moroccan taste that I was used to.
