Capturing the Lightning with My Mobile Phone (Day 5/365)

Taking photos of natural occurrences gives you that mixture of emotions, it is a roller coaster ride of emotions.

This year, I started mobile photography and all the photos I take now are via mobile phones either using my Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1 or the Huawei 3i. The fact that I used mobile phones to take photos, amplified that roller coaster of emotions.

Summer in Baguio City just ended and we have entered the rainy season, and during this time thunderstorms are common in the mountains of the Cordillera region. Since thunderstorms are common, I chanced upon being at a good angle watching lightning lighting up the sky from a distance. I thought, how cool would it be to capture the lightning with my mobile phone! I only had my phone, I have no tripod so I had to keep my hands steady, first try, nothing but black. After several failed attempts, I browsed over the features of my phone and tried the light painting feature, an it works! If I had a tripod, I could have gotten a lot sharper image of the lightning.

So if ever your phone have a light painting feature, try capturing a lightning, or any light movement and you will be amazed! My photo is nowhere near perfect but I am happy to have captured the lighting with my mobile phones.

If you have some cool light painting photos i’d love to see them too! Maybe add the photo on your comment in this post?

This is so cool @VincePH , thanks for sharing!

I just noticed that my camera also has this feature, so I will be trying it out the next time there’s thunder nearby.

Can you give som tips and pointers on how you captured your photos? Did you aim your phone in the general direction of the lightning and started filming in small intervals, or how did you go about?
