Capturing Light Trails

I became fascinated with capturing the image of high speed cars using a long camera exposure.

I have always dreamt of catching the superhero “Flash” in his motion.

So on a cool Sunday evening I head down to Aroma Junction in Awka Anambra state. The location of the spectacular bridge that lights up in the night.

I wait patiently until dusk, then I set my camera to F22 at shutter speed of 10 minutes and lowering the exposure compensation, then I get ready to capture the unseen motion.

With the speed at which light moves past me

I cannot hope to grab it

So I just let my camera trap it into its sophisticated lens.

The kind of photography you’re starting to get into is called light painting @Mekury and it can be a lot of fun. If you introduce moving light or fire you can make some spectacular images. I would suggest that f22 is not a great setting. Most digital cameras especially with consumer grade lenses suffer at f/16 and above. Stick to around f11 at most - you can experiment to find the best for your particular sensor and lens combination. I would suggest a shorter exposure and set the shutter to match the ambient light so that you get richer colour in your images.
