Captain James Cook was a very famous English explorer, navigator, cartographer who discovered and mapped many places around the world. There are many statues and monuments of this famous explorer around the world and I have seen quite a few but this one in Auckland, New Zealand is one of the most unique. It’s located inside a small two-level house in a prime waterfront location at the end of Queens Wharf, on the edge of Auckland’s busy harbor. Captain cook is depicted here in a one ton giant, highly polished stainless steel sculpture, but rather than the heroic figure that we often see in monuments and paintings of this famous explorer, here we see him sitting in a rather contemplative, more pensive and thoughtful pose in a room filled with different colored laser lights reflecting off him.
Thanks @Robert24 for your supportive comment. You hit the nail on the head, with all the different colored laser lights hitting the polished stainless steel Captain it certainly is a “light show”.
Yes it certainly is different to the usual bronze or stone statues that you usually see of this famous explorer @LingLing . I’m really happy that you like it and thank you for your appreciation.
Wow this is really cool! Is this a museum of James Cook? The statue is interesting indeed. I don’t think I’ve seen a statue of his anywhere that I have been. Do you know where else they have it?
New Zealand is a place where I can’t wait to visit. It’s always been on my list and it would be a dream.
Yes the statue is one of a kind, a standout and like you I hadn’t seen any statue like it anywhere in the world. One could be mistaken to think of it as the work of Jeff Koons, the American artist whom you may recall sculptured Michael Jackson and his chimpanzee Bubbles. It’s not a museum of James Cook as such but when I saw it, it was in a rather nondescript small house which of itself is artwork, so you could say it was a piece of art (a sculpture) within a bigger piece of artwork (the house). The house is called The Lighthouse byMichael Parekowhai, a renowned Maori (New Zealand) conceptual artist and his sculpture of Captain Cook was in it when I visited Auckland. However, I believe the sculpture of Captain Cook has been moved from exhibition to exhibition and finally acquired by the Art Gallery of NSW in Australia. Oh @DanniS New Zealand is a must visit, you’ll will love it. I’ve been there a few times now, most recently in February/March this year when I visited Milford Sound for a third time lol. You must show us your photos when you do visit !!!
