Can you add a Biking Trail in Google Maps?

Dear LGC friends,

dear enthusiasts of Google Maps and its “Road Editing” feature,

and fellow “ROADERS”,

I thought I had gained some experience in road editing, but as we know, there is always something new to learn, and asking for help is part of the growing process.

I must admit my defeat (and also my fatigue from continuously submitting the same modifications and always been rejected) in trying to register this long bicycle circuit. It was completed a few years ago, is spacious and well-organised, despite being within an urban area. There is also a sidewalk alongside it.

Would anyone accept the challenge and try to register this route? I’ll give up! Here are the coordinates. And if one day, I can select this path with my bicycle, I’ll know whom to thank !

These are the coordinates: 45.413543391731885, 9.274761556152312

And this is how it looks like:

Happy editing and thanks for accepting this challenge.

Take care

Marco

Buongiorno @MarcoDavoli

Done, in the sense that I started with a very little piece close to the parking. We will see, whether/when it will be refused or even accepted

Dear @MarcoDavoli as my knowledge biking trails & sidewalks edit by Google map team, what you think about my knowledge, you can correct me, if I’m wrong & little knowledge about G Map.

& Update edit

One more thing Google Street view not applicable in india. As my knowledge.

Hello @ShailendraOjha I can partially confirm your statement, since I had problems in the past to add a bike track close to a street. However, just a couple of days ago a very short part of that track was accepted and I wait now, hoping the extension edits will also be accepted.

Marked in green the short part, which was accepted very recently. Obviously I am still waiting for all other orange all around it:

Hi @MarcoDavoli i just check the map

Is this a curb Ramp ? for accessibility

Ciao @WilfriedB ,

I’m very pleased to see that there are friends coming to the rescue. Thank you very much. I’m really interested to see if a “different hand” can achieve approval.

Enjoy

@ShailendraOjha

few years ago (I live close that area) they have created this new biking trail (almost paint in red ) with also a pedestrian area.

Is quite long and will be soon connected to a new trail in the south park of Milano. Should be different Km

In the urban area the trail has different sloped surface to connect it to the street.

ABout StreetView in India… I do not know if you can do and upload it but I saw that is available.

Ciao

Hi @MarcoDavoli

As you might know The Netherlands and Denmark is are in an ongoing competition to provide the very best infrastructure encouraging the use of bicycles. Hence we have a ton of bike paths on Maps. In fact I many areas the bike paths are more complicated that what we volunteers possibly can suggest. So both Copenhagen and Amsterdam have entered into a geo upload partnership with Google Maps. Hence adding new bike paths in such areas is pretty much impossible as the geo upload partners are of cause trusted more than random volunteers.

I don’t know if this is the case here, but I just wanted to share this.

All the best

Hi @ShailendraOjha

I have never seen curb ramps indicated on Google Maps, so I doubt it us possible.

When biking in other European countries with less than the very best bicycle infrastructure, I often find that the bike path will yield to the cars, do the hight if the bike path will get lower to the height of the asphalt dedicated to cars.

In my country at least in major cities the opposite is the case. At intersections the cars will need to slow down considerably because the car asphalt level is increased to the height of the bike path asphalt. This results in much more pleasant riding and much better protection for us bicyclists :biking_man:

Større for taking this opportunity to brag about great bicycle infrastructure.

Thanks for detailed explanation dear @MortenCopenhagen sir :pray:

@MarcoDavoli and @ShailendraOjha

I looked at the case in question in this thread:

I’m please to see that the bike path is elevated from the street asphalt. That is super protection for the bikers. But I also noticed that there is no height difference to where the pedestrians are walking. Danish sidewalks are always elevated from cars and from the bike paths. Again better protection for the softer/slower moving people in the traffic.

You can see that the Italian bike path get lower at the intersection. That is in my opinion not the best practice when it comes to protecting bicyclists.

I found this illustration using street view:

Notice how the sidewalk is elevated from the bike path.

Also, cars are encouraged to slow down considerably at intersections as the sidewalk and the bike paths function as very effective speed bumps. So no red paint is needed :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Hello @MarcoDavoli and others on this job,

I love the relaxed atmosphere of this post. It’s different when we have 1005 roads to add on a day. Lol. :rofl:

I realised one thing on mapping Nigeria and some African countries I got lots of approved local roads because we hardly have any biking trials.:melting_face:. I mean proper ones,or at least I haven’t seen.

We do have narrow footpaths though. Which really should not be mapped Most roads are local roads. Therfore I can’t say I have a professional hand in this. Please let us know whenever it’s approved. Congratulations to all again

Happy guiding

Happy mapping

Cheers.

Ciao @MortenCopenhagen ,

I heard about this “competition” from my niece who moved to live/work in Leiden since a couple of years.

Where I live the biking trail are only a “political discussion” on the funds usage… unfortunately. We are still too far to think to cooperate or having a partnership with Google Maps. Even if the project was nice.

I hope that someone has accepted the proposed task and are able to draw it. Or I’ll try again to add them by myself.

Thanks for your time

@MortenCopenhagen ,

ehehe your experience in “biking trail” helped you to notice something that drove as crazy: protection.

Is sad to say but they (major of the city or consultant) do not have the culture of bikers.

Enjoy

Not sure what “register” means but if you want to “share” this track with others then do a “directions” using “cycle” but Google My Maps and Google Earth might be more appropriate.

If you could please give coordinates of start/end I will explain

@MarcoDavoli

The first two segments, I tried to add are still pending. I also tried to add more further North and to the South a couple of days later, but they were all rejected :disappointed_relieved: . It seems the same happened to segments in the same area added by someone else.

(screenshot as June, 18):

When I saw your photos, I remembered having seen a very similar red colored bike path in Perugia, so I also tried to register it, but it was also rejected within two days or less.

However, meanwhile I got several biking/walking paths in Germany accepted within a couple of days. Unlike the paths in Italy, they are not painted red. Does that make a difference :thinking: …? Another possible difference is the fact, I also added several POIs, photos and reviews recently within 3 - 4 km vicinity.

Hi @Camo_Rama ,

in Google Maps when you find a missing road or trail or pedestrian/bike path you can draw it so that, in future, users that are asking of directions can benefit of this new road.

This only if your edit is approved (registered) by the system.

Take care

Hi Marco,

The issue in the “Road Fix” facility is not that a path is “missing” (your path is there, 1 km long) but about if it is “trackable” when using Sat Nav for directions and in your case none of it is at present and when I looked 2 days ago you had drawn some parts of it (orange dots). You now may need to wait days or even weeks for it to be assessed but as there are breaks I don’t think AI will approve it.

On the other hand if you simply want to give it a name that is a different matter.
