Camping on Phnom Thbeng Meanchey, a dream place (Part I)

Hello all LGs,

I hope you are doing well. I just came back from my work trip earlier this week for 3 nights off the beaten path, no phone or internet service. I had a great time which I think I should share with you all here.

In my previous post about Best Camping Spot around Cambodia, I mentioned about many camping areas in Cambodia, including Friendly camping destinations, Medium camping destination, Extreme camping destination and Luxurious camping destinations. This one I went camping was one of the Medium camping destinations which is Phnom Thbeng Meanchey natural park (Google map is here). I also wrote about the mountain here, earlier in Connect with some tips for what to bring when you go hiking and camping there (for your reference to read). This is my third time going up the mountain.

How to get there

This site is located in Preah Vihear province, so you can either travel from Siem Reap, Phnom Penh or Stung Treng. There are no public bus to get there but you can hire a taxi or take your own cars.

  • Go to Taing You Community Based Tourism (CBET) or Chak Angre CBET to arrange your trip. You can book in advanced or book while walk in. You can book for food or buy your own food there.
  • You can even go there yourself since there are signs along the way, but I advise that taking a guide with you is safer.
  • You can arrange to have a porter to go with you and carry your staff. A local guide is also available at request. A cook is also available.

About the entire trip, well, first we hiked about 1,000m distance for 400m height. Then, we trekked about 5km to the camping site.

Facilities at camping site

There are no much facilities found in the site. It has only camping hut, a small kitchen area and two blocks of toilet. Other than that, all are truly adventurous places to be. You get to bath the waterfall or the stream nearby the camping hut. Luckily, there are roof from the camping hut, so we didn’t get wet when it rained the first night. It is cold and pleasant to stay there though. However, for most campers, they use small tents and camp nearby the site. This site is actually very popular among youth. There are so many waterfalls up the mountains where you spend your days swimming up here. I spent two nights up the mountain.

  • A camping hut with a solar system
  • A dining place
  • A kitchen
  • A toilet

Activities can be done here

A mix of activities can be done here: camping, trekking, hiking, fishing, stargazing and small partying or chitchatting with your friends.

Attractions around the site

There are several attractions around the site, talking about 5km around the site. They can be accessed on foot only (hiking/trekking). Two nights and Three days are good to explore the site.

  • Taing You stream
  • Taing You temple
  • Taing You waterfall
  • Chak Angre Leu waterfall
  • Veal Thmo Huot
  • Veal Preah Bath
  • Chakraval waterfall
  • Chak Angre Krom/Anlung Svay waterfall
  • Phnom Penh look out
  • Veal Thma Projol

Hi @Sophia_Cambodia

Around the early 1980s many Cambodians were able to escape the Khmer Rouge, the old regime, to come live in America. Many of my classmates at that time and all throughout my primary school years were Cambodians. The only images I had ever seen of their country were destruction and famine and that is why they left Cambodia. They were so happy to be living in the U.S. Until today, after looking at your photos, I am convinced of how beautiful your country is. I never imagined it to have so much greenery and peaceful surroundings. Thank you for sharing.
