Camping in Saudi Arabia

When I lived in Saudi Arabia, I enjoyed getting out in the desert to hike. Sometimes I also camped with friends, and other times we mixed with the locals.

It was spectacular camping under the stars. One experience I was camping with locals and we went out to hunt for Jerboas, which are a mouse type rodent. We would get on back of pick-ups and chase them around the desert until one was frightened by the lights and we would catch them. We would go back to camp and cook them and eat them (not much meat on them though).

The locals were fun and very hospitable.

Here is where we camped https://goo.gl/maps/VDwnHSirncU2, and here are some of my photos https://photos.app.goo.gl/ZXyykWv5zmGQTQue9

You have really experienced more than the average man @TheEagleEye , thanks for sharing!

Camping in the desert sounds awesome, it would be great to try for a few weeks and get a break from the city.

How long did you live in Saudi Arabia? And for the most important question, how many Jerboas does it take to feed a man?

I lived in Riyadh for 3 1/2 years @MortenSI . I camped in some amazing places that’s for sure. It would take many more Jerboas to feed a man than you can catch. They are very fast and not easy to catch. It is just a fun thing to do.

I bet it’s an interesting culture to get to know first hand @TheEagleEye .

If you were to describe the taste of a Jerboa, what is the first thing that comes to mind?

The photos are amazing once again, @TheEagleEye . How much time did you spend living in Saudi Arabia? Are you sure it was safe eating Jerboa? Aren’t they supposed to be deadly?

I was in Saudi Arabia for 3 1/2 years @IrrPavlova . The locals eat Jerboas often and I only had a taste, not much at all. I wasn’t sick at all.
