Camping and Hiking in Girraween National Park, Australia

We often visit Girraween to bike ride, but it also a great place just to camp, chill out, enjoy the kookaburras and do some hiking.

We usually stay at the Bald Rock Campsite. Bookings here are essential and can be made on the Queensland Government web site, or at the visitor centre, though the internet connection is not great. Note that park access is often restricted due to drought or bush-fires.

Full disclosure, we travel in a Holden Panelvan, camp in an OzTent RV5, no pets, or kids and don’t mind if the amenities are a little basic.

Camp amenities, including hot showers.

From Bald Rock Campsite the day use area and visitor centre are a short walk away. Maps are available for many short walks either west along Bald Rock Creek towards The Junction (relatively flat and easy walk).

Typical hiking path.

Bald Rock Creek at The Junction.

Or head east past The Granite Arch towards The Pyramid (aboriginal name: Terrawambilla). This tall granite monolith is steep and strenuous to climb. It can be windy on the way up and slippery after rain. Recommend good shoes that grip.

There are many longer walks available, for example Mount Norman. Plus day visit areas along Pyramids Road to Dr Roberts Waterhole and The Underground Creek.

Popular paths are well signed.

But, just wandering around the campsite and checking out the local flora and fauna is also great.

Reason why it is called The Granite Belt.
