I am looking to purchase a camera for a hoobie and also contribute more to the community and maps. Once I purchase my camera I want to spend free time driving , walking, and biking. Taking lots of pictures of building people and places to share. Anyone have a suggestion on a camera to purchase ??? I want more then a POINT AND SHOT , I don’t have a lot of money. i want to take the camera every where with me . I also enjoy photo editing .
Hi @Kris101
Let me start off by saying that I am not a professional photographer and have no training whatsoever in photography. I’m just a hobbyist who likes taking photos of the places I visit and love helping others, as others have helped me ?
So now to your question! I personally now mainly use my smartphone to take pictures of Places of Interest and I am happy with the results (see the first two example photos below). The camera technology on smartphones has progressed so much that rather than referring to it as a smartphone, I have often referred to my mobile phone as a smartcamera because I find I use it more for photos than as a phone lol.
However having said that, I also have a small, very inexpensive pocket camera, it’s an old Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX2 which takes unbelievable photos (see one example photo below) and I am sure that you could purchase at a reasonable price, a much later model of this or a similar camera with much greater capability!
Keep guiding and
I would recommend a mirrorless camera @Kris101 they are so much better than giant DSLR dinosaurs. There is no such thing as a right or wrong camera. There are lots of small camera formats that would meet your needs.
Since you travel and want to carry it with you you’ll want something small and light. For flexibility consider a camera with interchangeably lenses so in the future when your experience and knowledge grows you can buy more expensive lenses. Most of them come with one or two kit lenses that will suit most people.

Hi @Kris101 ,
in addition to the advice of friends above, if you have difficulty in choosing, I suggest you read the posts on specialized photography sites (here just some examples: photographypx.com, digitalcameraworld.com, ephotozine.com etc. etc.) and then after evaluating the budget , pros and cons make your choice. If you still have doubts about the final choice you can always ask here for further advice on the models you have selected!
Bye,
David
