[Cambodian food] Some special food around Cambodia

Revolving around food, I would like to introduce few regional dishes that are best in Cambodia. Some provinces are very good with somethings. Lucky me, I have traveled often around Cambodia so I am able to taste those specialty. There are few provinces that have best food ever, Kompot, Battambang, Koh Kong, Phnom Penh, Takeo and Prey Veng, my hometown.

Some dishes are very common but some are signature of the specific regions only.

  • Common: food that you can find anywhere, such as bamboo shoot soup, sizzling pancakes, rice noodle, Teouk Kreoung or Asian Mackerel dip sauce, papaya salad, corn salad, rice roll, sour fruits as snacks during the day!
  • Kompot specialties: famous for its seafood, ex. crab fried-rice, rice noodle with hot soup.
  • Koh Kong, famous for its seafood too, crab, shrimp and lobsters! There is a restaurant along the way that you can order in advanced those fresh seafood, Google map is here.
  • Takeo: fresh water lobsters that are found in the lake. A kilo is 30-40$. Only specific season you can have them.
  • Battambang: also very famous for its fruits and roasted duck, and some special noodles such as Macaroni pasta Asian style which you can search on Google map here… In Siem Reap, there is a specific one that is so good and only found in here, raw fermented fish with pork intestine.
  • Vegetarian food can be found a lot in Phnom Penh and Siem Reap such as at Vitking house which you can find here
  • Actually, there are more but I am fascinated with these dishes and I have them frequently.

All photos took by myself and all dishes have also been consumed by me.

@Sophia_Cambodia Lucky me that I just had some snacks so I’m not too hungry when I see these food photos of yours. Hahaha. We have most of dishes you have too. I have a question though. For the steamed chicken on rice, is it the normal steamed rice or how you cook it?

@Erik_van_den_Ham thank you, the pancake has meat stuff inside which you eat together with side vegetable. It can be with chicken, or pork.

It goes together with sauce, vegetables and this one. It is very popular that you can find in Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand.

@Ant_Bad_Yogi hahaha, lolz.

Rice before steamed, they fried it with garlic then steam it by using water from boiling chicken to cook the rice and add some ginger & spring onion in it. I will try it soon.

@Ant_Bad_Yogi You are right here, I believe some dishes are not originated from Cambodia ourselves but they are popular among us. Maybe the taste are made to meet our taste.

However, some places they do very well and in a specific way that you can find anywhere else!

These dishes are so good and as I have been traveling and ate very good food since I was a kid, I know when I get the yummy one.

Iam saying in general @Sophia_Cambodia We have this regional food called Shrimps pulao, where we use shrimps instead of Lobsters.
