Buried on page 500: the real reason new members don't stay

Great topic and I admire your honesty!

We need reflection like this to improve our forum!

We do have super helpful and warmed hearted LG reply to the first timer…Like all forums, we will need some time and consistency…You can only win ONE badge at a time!

Thank you for your post! I look forward to seeing your future post! @Khalil_Jouf

Hello @Khalil_Jouf

I have a feeling this is going to turn into quite a long discussion. There are two sides to this post.

You’re right about the welcome post. I do read “about me” posts from new users when they are published as separate topics, but it’s really difficult to find them among a long stream of posts. And sometimes I really like someone’s introduction and want to read it again, only to find that it has already been moved into the general topic.

For example, @NayeKev had a really interesting story. She first published it as a separate topic, and I really enjoyed reading it. But later, I had a hard time finding it among all the comments in the general topic. And the version there wasn’t the same lively story she had originally written—it was a shortened version in the form of a cookie-cutter template.

As for the feeling that the forum is a bit restrained, though, I don’t agree with you. I’ve only been here for about a month, and I actually enjoy reading the articles. For me, the most important thing is that the forum feels alive — there are always new topics to read.

As for how much attention our own articles get, I think that has a lot to do with experience. If my posts don’t get much reaction, maybe it simply means I’m not experienced enough yet, and that’s why my articles don’t attract much attention. (Google Maps is a completely different environment, with a different pace and audience.)

I’m still a newcomer, so maybe I don’t notice some of the aspects that you do, and that might be why I’m enjoying the forum so much.

Sometimes it’s important to point out the negative sides too, rather than only praise everything, and I think you did a great job highlighting that:+1:t2:

Halo sahabatku @Khalil_Jouf , kamu kreatif banget sih
Keren . Semangat terus yaa :wink::bouquet:

Hi @Khalil_Jouf !

I understand your frustration; you’re not the first to report this situation. It’s similar to someone who spends hours writing a very detailed post, complete with photos, only to have it published and then disappear from view within a few hours. One of the main problems is how Connect is set up: the home page only has four categories, and the scrolling menu on the right is where 90 percent of users spend their time on Connect (my humble opinion).
For example, in the “Google Maps contributions stories” category, there’s also a scrolling menu, and I’m sure few people have the knowledge to use tags to select specific indexed posts. People are always in a hurry, and even an extra click is considered a waste of time or unnecessary.
Perhaps a suggestion would be that when you open a category from those proposed here on Connect, a page opens with other possible choices that are more immediate for users (here’s a quick example for the “Google Maps contributions stories” category with the categories already clearly visible:

Over the years, I remember three or four major changes to Connect that initially caused users some concern. These changes brought both positive and, obviously, negative changes.
But perhaps the main problem is that these days, we’re used to having everything right away, and we “adapt” to using platforms without interacting with the options or possibilities they offer!

Don’t give up, keep contributing! :+1:

David

Hi everyone,

I’ve only written one post here so far, and that’s precisely because I was asked to follow the presentation format. It’s not that I don’t know how to follow rules, but I have to admit I was a little disappointed to see that a community that is all about sharing experiences from different places has to follow such a cold and uninteresting format for its posts.

In my previous version, I mentioned how important it is to keep our written experiences natural, especially in the age of AI. I truly believe that humans need humans human experiences, human perspectives, and the feeling that what we’re reading was written by a real person. A genuine experience.

There’s also the fact that even on Google Maps, when we repeatedly write our experiences using the exact same structure and wording, our reviews can be removed because they may be considered robotic or inauthentic. So I was honestly quite surprised to see posts in the community that feel robotic, repetitive, and sometimes even give me the impression that they were simply run through AI.

But anyway… hahaha.

Yes, dear fellow LG @Khalil_Jouf
I too understand your frustration and also your points - I do admit that they are genuine.
But, I sincerely don’t know the final outcome…

Over the past 9 years, I have been blessed with friends who support my contributions… fortunate…that is all.

Regards
:folded_hands:

Thank you very much for your kind response…
I fully agree with you, dear LG friend, @Khalil_Jouf

However, may be I started at a time when Connect Moderators and even Google Moderators were new here, had enough interactions with them - may be I was fortunate…

Not at all, dear brother… @Khalil_Jouf
You are most welcome…

I love such FRANK discussions and exchanges…
A difference of opinion can be very politely informed without hurting anyone…

Most sincerely with gratitude,
:folded_hands:

One point to note @Khalil_Jouf, is that some people don’t come to Connect to be prolific writers of posts or to engage in social media activity. I was introduced to Connect as the place to get help on a technical issue with my Google Maps activity. I obviously wrote a post at that time to state my issue and try to get help from other members. I am still here after many years, as you can see, but I’ve only started 22 threads in all that time. Yet, I could be considered a person who’s very active on Connect.

I also didn’t appreciate being told to post on the Introduce Yourself thread, and I don’t think I actually did. The other thing I find strange is moderators posting on every thread, just to say the Tags are incorrect. People don’t want to be told they did something wrong. They want contributions to the conversation.

Thanks for giving me the opportunity to get those feelings off my chest.
