Bugs when uploading with latest Android version of Google Maps ver 4/13/2023

Has anyone been experiencing bugs with the latest Google Maps app? Curiously, these problem started yesterday but I noticed the latest app version was released April 13th and I’ve had no issues till yesterday which makes me wonder if it’s server side.

I’ve had these issues so far:

  • Not loading/slowly loading my user profile and info.
  • A photo upload of a restaurant POI will occasionally glitch when the “is this a menu time” popup appears.
    • A blank page ends up appearing with no way to interact with the screen.
    • This seems to be the start of the problem as attempting to upload non-restaurant POIs after this will result in the same blank screen bug.
  • Differences in photo data between web and Android app.

Any combination of restarting app/phone, waiting and troubleshooting by isolating variables has not worked. I’ve double checked and it appears my photos are not being reviewed for content moderation.

Apologies if this is the wrong topic section. It’s not clear to me where these kinds of posts for help/discussion should go.

@photoslinger I use Samsung S22 ultra and updated latest version of Google Maps and do not find any problem.

Hello fellow LG @photoslinger

Firstly, let me clear your one doubt.

“It’s not clear to me where these kinds of posts for help/discussion should go.”

It is best suited in “How to” session.

Regarding the your issue:

It is a known fact that (currently) there are technical glitches in Google Maps, which they are working to correct it. This is regarding the reviews or photos not visible publicly.

For your further doubts, I tag our senior Moderator @MortenCopenhagen - I’m sure, he will be very helpful.

Regards to you both.

Hi @photoslinger

I’m on a newer version from April 17th. It might be worth downloading it to see if that will fix your issue.

If persisting, could you maybe try on an other device (friend phone) with your account to test if the issue is linked to your account or your device?

You could also check if the problem persists when on a faster/stronger wifi.

Else we will need one of the Google Moderators to look into this. If so, you will need to share your operating system version also.

Cheers

I am facing this  problem with few photos, it says “No user photo available here” on desktop, but it’s fine on android.

Kindly start a new thread. Things get too complicated when two issues are discussed in one thread.

Hey @MortenCopenhagen

I tried your suggestion and updated to the April 17th version. It did not resolve the issue unfortunately :disappointed: Are you on Android? I’m using a Pixel 7 Pro.

Will try another device today and update.

Looking forward to your next reply.

An update for you @MortenCopenhagen as well as others that might find this interesting-

I tried contributing on an older Pixel 6 Pro as opposed to my Pixel 7 Pro and it magically worked! Same app version, fresh restart on both, just different devices.

While I was contributing on the Pixel 6 Pro I started to notice some strange behavior. My workflow started being augmented with automatic app flips between Google Maps and Google Photos. Usually I have to manually flip between apps during my LG contribution workflow but this somehow started being (occasionally) automated. I then remembered about Google’s machine learning ambitions and their Tensor chip.

I tried researching more about Tensor but could only find vague mentions about personalized phone machine learning. It is heavily implied that machine learning and AI exist on the latest generation of Pixel phones, however, I have not been able to find explicit info that a phone will automate and replicate user behaviors when it determines they are occurring frequently enough. Funny enough, yesterday was Google’s I/O webcast and all they talked about was AI. I wasn’t able to listen to the whole event so not sure if what I’m rationalizing was addressed during the webcast.

Now as to why I believe this is related to the issues with my Google Maps app- when contributing a photo to a restaurant, Google frequently prompts the user to specify if the photo is of a food dish and to label it. I’ve always quickly dismissed these prompts by responding as not a food time while quickly switching back to Google Photos. I believe something might have happened where my behavior triggered the on board Pixel machine learning to record a automated procedure that erroneously gets called at the wrong time. It still does not explain why my Maps data sometimes doesn’t load unless it’s related to ML screwing something up within the app.

TL:DR - My rationalization for my Google Maps app issues stem from my Google Pixels machine learning gone awry.

If my theory is correct, does anyone know how to remove a Pixel machine learning automated routine?

Thanks for the update.

Google photos can open Google Maps when you share a photo to Google Maps. It will automatically suggest what pin to upload the photo to.

Is this what you mean by automatic flips?

I have no idea how to reset the Local AI.

Your 3 2-letter acronyms towards the end needs sone translation, please.

Ah apologies!
ML = machine learning

TL:DR = too long, didn’t read - means a brief synopsis of my post (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Too_long;_didn%27t_read)

Google photos can open Google Maps when you share a photo to Google Maps. It will automatically suggest what pin to upload the photo to.

Correct. This occurs after I share to Google Maps. While I was using my Pixel 6 Pro for an extended amount of time, it started automatically flipping back to Google Photos from Google Maps right after I made a contribution. So I clicked “Post” from within the Google Maps then it automatically switched me back to Google Photos.

This is also different then the behavior I’m seeing on my Pixel 7 Pro. On the Pixel 7 Pro it seems like it’s acting to dismiss the Is This A Food Item prompt and somehow inadvertently breaking the user interface.

This is heavy conjecture from me, but I have a background in software engineering so I’m quick to blame things on buggy software

Thanks for the clarifications.

On my Huawei I have always had to do a manual hotswap back to Google Photos.
