~The most interesting thing I’ve done as a local guide~ Exploring Bruny Island
I love to add photos or videos of places where I see a dearth of media. A rural area with less contributions is exciting to me, because it offers a space for me to contribute and create something where less people are on the map in general. It’s always nice to be notified that my photos have been chosen to be the top ones selected for display at a remote or relatively new location.
When I visited Bruny Island, in Tasmania, Australia, I immediately noticed how very remote it felt, and what a small amount of people had been there before me. There seemed to be a few outposts along our route that would be good places to stop, and might not have much publicity. Putting these on the map, so to speak, and helping to support these small businesses (some of which depend on seasonal traffic and online shipping during the off-season) made my contributions feel uniquely helpful.
Bruny Island Honey was an adorable shop filled with all types of honey products, and they even had a beehive in the wall, open to the outside at the back of the house. The proprietor was telling us about how they bring their bees to different types of flowers and plants, creating different flavor profiles in the honey!
We also stopped at Bruny Island Cheese Co, where they sell delightful small batches of goods, and even name their cheeses to describe their properties. Tom, for example, is a simple day-old cheese with a pure fresh flavor.
At the end of the day after visiting a few small businesses, we hiked a trail to the Fluted Cape Walk, which has a view of Penguin Island and truly feels like the end of the world.
