Kolkata bridge collapse: Rail Vikas Nigam Limited says Majerhat incident not linked to metro construction:
Kolkata: A portion of the arterial Majerhat bridge in Alipore area of South Kolkata collapsed today following which some casualties are feared, police said.
As per reports, some vehicles were also crushed during the incident. Fire brigade, police and NDRF personnel are engaged in rescue work.
Speaking on the mishap, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee who is currently in Darjeeling has said that priority is being given on relief and rescue work.
“Our team is focused on relief and rescue work. Our priority is relief and rescue. Rest of the investigation will be done later,” Banerjee said.
Urban Development and the Minister for Municipal Affairs Firhad Hakim said, “It was a 40-year-old bridge. As of now there has been no casualty, but search operations are underway, let us wait.”
