The Botero Museum is located within the museum complex of the Banco de la República, in a building that was formerly the Archbishop’s Palace, but was rebuilt and since November 1, 2000 is the place that houses 123 paintings and sculptures by the Colombian artist Fernando Botero Angulo and 85 International works of the private collection that Fernando Botero donated to Colombia, as an act of peace for the enjoyment of all Colombians, respecting 3 conditions of the artist: 1) The entrance will be always free and public; 2) None of the works can be borrowed or exchanged; and, 3) Botero would be in charge of the disposition of the halls and the distribution of the artworks.
The house museum is of colonial style, has two floors, stairs, internal garden and several exhibition halls; It is very large, so it’s better to wear comfortable shoes and layers of clothing because Bogota is a city with a very chanching temperate climate, it may be sunny but it suddenly rains and it’s cold.
In te museum, visitor can see that most of artist’s work are large. At the entrance, the public sees the sculpture of a big hand, everyone wants to take their first picture next to this sculpture and it’s worth waiting for the turn to pose next, because the photos look good. The characters of Botero have short torso, long legs, big faces with eyes, noses and small mouths, in his paintings he disminishes elements os the landscape, such as mountains, but he paints large clouds, draws very low horizon lines, giving a monumental character to his personages.
At the international section of the donation exhibits works of modern art; the impressionism, surrealism, cubism and expressionism have their representatives in Monet, Renoir, Dalí, Picaso, Miró and Max Beckmann, to name a few.
