Botanical garden of Wellington, New Zealand

One of the amazing memory from Wellington is to visit the Botanical Garden. It is so colorful, relaxing, refreshing as there are many things to see, counting from flowers to big trees. There is a big rose garden there, then a variety of flowers. Wellington Botanical Garden covers 25hectars of land, part of it is the hill and was created in 1868. It is the national significant and run by the city council. It is best for exercise and day out for families and kids.

I have been there many times during my stay there, from summer, spring, winter and autumn. All the photos I am sharing here are not captured in one trip. It gave me so much joy to see and I was imaging that each city in the world consider this kind of park, to show their varieties and also a place for exercise for people living around this area.

Areas in the garden divided into many sections in the garden such as:

  • Succulent Garden
  • Australian Garden
  • Rose Garden
  • Main Garden (including duck pond)
  • Begonia House
  • Native Bush (including trails)
  • Discovery Garden

Where? Central of Wellington City

What you see there?

  • In the whole garden, there are exceptional blend of native bush, exotic trees, plant collections and stunning seasonal floral bedding displays – including 25,000 tulips in spring. There are famous garden to visit such as Lady Norwood Rose Garden, the Begonia House conservatory tropical and temperate areas, succulent, fragrant and herb gardens, duck pond, historic conifer collection, sculpture walk, Peace Flame garden and a heritage rose collection in the adjacent Bolton Street Memorial Park. S****pecial Plant Collections: Herbs, camellias, modern and heritage roses, conifers, begonias, cacti and succulents, ferns, perennials, grasses, native streamside, woodland gardens, red garden, floral bedding, native and exotic trees and NZ forest areas.
  • Carter observatory (the National Observatory of New Zealand).

There are 3 famous sections:

  • “Lady Norwood Rose Garden (1950)”,
  • “Begonia House (1960)”,
  • “Treehouse Visitor Centre (1990) in conjunction with the World Wildlife Fund”

How to access: Free access to public, the botanical garden can be accessed on foot or by the famous cable car of little capital Wellington.

Secrets: New Zealand has no snakes so be there at the garden midnight and try to see glow worms. It is amazing like you walk in the galaxy. There is also Spring Festival in the garden in September (if I remember well, search before) every year where they live music, eat out and enjoy the night show of color on the trees. I really love that part.

Every big city in New Zealand has Botanical Garden. Auckland, Wellington, Hamilton, Napier, Christchurch and Dunedin. Since Wellington is small, the garden is within walking distance, that’s what I love about it. The one in Christchurch is huge too but I was there in winter so cannot really see through to it. However, I haven’t seen the one in Hamilton. Botanical Garden in Hamilton was said by the locals that the biggest and best among all.

@C_T thank you dear. There are more but I’m going to run out of space soon so I have to think about how many photos I should put in one post :hugs: . The garden is so big as of 25 hectares and there are a variety of plants. Lady Norwood Rose garden alone has more than 100 species of roses.

Auckland city also has such a garden but I bet it cannot be compared to Wellington. Since Wellington is small, the garden is within walking distance, that’s what I love about it.
