Botanical Garden of Lucca: a precious garden

A precious garden, this is how it is defined the Botanical Garden of Lucca, a green island of about two hectares in the middle of the historical city center, close to the city walls.

The garden has been founded in the 1820 on a request of the princess Elisa Bonaparte Baciocchi, sister of Napoleone Bonaparte and with high interests in nature and biodiversity. However the foundation was not so simple since the princess was forced to leave Lucca when the Napoleon Empire was falling down, this was 1814, but her idea of the botanical garden was taken back by Maria Luisa di Bordone, new Duchess of Lucca after her.

The garden has been passing by several owners along the years till when the ownership was finally given to the city of Lucca in 1903, it has been maintained very well for many years till when it has been hitting a recession when his curator died and after that a very big infection of termites appointed it.

In 1980 the garden comes back to its original shape and it has been keeping well maintained till now, when in 2020, it reached the 200 anniversary of its foundation.

The garden is divided in several sections, a general one with trees and plants from all around the region but also from outside, imagine the oldest tree in the garden is dated 1822 and it is a Cider of Lebanon planted by some seeds coming from the Botanical Garden of Pisa, this tree was existing in Lucca even before the garden was built around it and it is now height 20 meters.

Another section contains a small natural lake with its water biodiversity, for this small lake an old legend exists about a lady called Lucida Mansi. She was a very known person in 1600 in Lucca joining the rich life of the city, she was so beautiful that many men were looking after her. A day she noticed in the mirror the trace of her first wrinkle and she started crying and desperating till when she met a very beautiful man, he was the Devil. He promised her 30 more years of her beautiness in exchange of her soul … she accepted directly! After the 30 years the Devil came back to renew his offer but Lucida refused. Because of that, and the original promise 30 years back, the Devil took her soul and put her on a flaming carriage riding all around the historical walls of Lucca so that the population could hear her crying and all her desperate moans, after that he sunk her and the carriage in this lake where she is currently sleeping. The legend says that every night before midnight on the 31st of October you can see the carriage riding, hear the clogs and seeing it going deep into the hell. The reality is that Lucida died of the Plague.

The garden has got also a section with a edible types of plants and even a controlled environment closed area for cacti plants from several countries of the world. Here I have to admit that my thoughts went to the Cacti and Succulent post of @ermest, I was so curious to see all the Cacti shapes existing here, when I was surprised reading the amazing variety in the post by Ermes.

Along the path to visit the garden there are also several benches where you can seat, relax and admire this beautiful nature.

The garden is almost full accessible, with a wheelchair path along the main routes (few offsite sections however don’t have it), accessible toilets and also plant descriptions for visually impaired people.

Of course flowers cannot miss and there are many different types growing and maintained here, in this season there were many still open and you could spot all the nice colors inside the vivid green average color of the landscape.

Do you have a botanical garden in your city? Did you know the oldest one in Italy is in Padua?

Amazing Botanical Garden, @LuigiZ , I love the story behind the place, and I love the view in Google Earth, where you can also see the greenhouse.

I am sure @Erik_van_den_Ham will be happy to read your post, and the view of the cacti will makes @KarenVChin smiling.

BTW, I have to correct you. Padua Botanical Garden is simply the most ancient Botanical Garden of the world. The first one, built on 1545 by the Benedictine monks, that still be in the original position.

Great photos, as usual

Thank you very much @ErmesT , you inspired me visit it with your latest posts as I never did since leaving in Lucca. This weekend I was alone so why not discover something of the city  … and it was a very good decision, very nice garden!

Oeps, sorry, I had in mind world but I see I actually written Italy, apologies for the mistake  .

Unfortunately the greenhouse is closed for maintenance so couldn’t be visited, only the part with Cacti was open but it is indeed visible from the satellite view, you can see what a big piece of green it is inside the historical city center :deciduous_tree: .

Hello @LuigiZ this botanic garden looks really great. I love these green havens of biodiversity. Wherever I go and I get the chance I visit them. Especially the ones that are more South (Mediterranean climate) oriented. I love how transparent the Fagus sylvatica ‘Laciniata’ (= derived from Latin: lacer meaning ‘fringed or very deeply cut, torn or slashed into narrow divisions’.)

Your wonderful pictures and collages showing the diversity and beauty of the garden. The history of these places is always interesting. So good to hear they restored the place
This one goes on my ‘to do’ map for sure.

Thank you @ErmesT for the tip!

Hi @Erik_van_den_Ham ,

thanks a lot for your comment, nice you are so passionate and indeed they are so interesting with all kind of biodiversity… oh nice indeed about the name  .

If you come visiting Lucca then indeed make a stop here, it is also a very good relaxing moment inside a piece of nature. Did you visited any of the gardens in the Netherlands? I know there are several of them in different cities but personally never visited them.

Good morning @LuigiZ I visited almost all of the Botanic gardens in the Netherlands. The oldest one in the Netherlands is the Hortus Botanicus Leiden. I really like that one as it is a unique place at the centre of the city.
The best known one might be the Hortus Botanicus Amsterdam as this is probably the one most tourist will find at their visit to our main capital.

My personal love goes out to the Utrecht Botanic Gardens

as they have a huge rock garden as the main feature. As we have no serious mountains in our flatland I was charmed by this garden many years ago.
Of course there are many more and I will highlight some of them perhaps in upcoming posts.

Wow, this is very nice @Erik_van_den_Ham , I’m looking at the photos and locations on Maps and they are very nice, indeed the best one (also from the photos) looks like the one in Utrecht.

They also look like both quite big, one in the city and the other just bit outside. Thank you for sharing them and looking forward to your posts about them  .

When I visit some cities I hardly visit a botanical garden because they are not normally interesting, but your photos and your description stimulate curiosity. Well done and well written post, congratulations @LuigiZ

Thans a lot for sharing the Botanical garden of Lucca.

I use to go and relax at this botanical garden in Nantes as I use to leave near by. Unfortunatly, I haven’t been there for a while.

I have to go back and take photos!

Thank you very much @DENIT33 ! Yes that’s true or at least is what we normally think (myself I was as well) if we are not very passionate about plants and nature, however I learned that you can discover very nice things and they are worth a visit  .

Thank you very much @Julien44 for your comment!

It is indeed a relaxed place, good choice, you are in the nature, there is silence and you can take a rest on one of the bench available … what better combination  .

The garden in Nantes seems to be very nice, I like the fact of being an Island in the middle of the city, should be amazing! You should definitely go back, so you can share some of the photos with us  .

Hugs my friend!

saludos Farid

@LuigiZ so green, that’s what I love about the botanical garden and the park. We don’t have it here in Cambodia sadly.
