History
Legend has it that Mughal Emperor Akbar of Delhi sent his chief commander ‘Man Singh’ to conquer Bengal in the late 16th century. On reaching Dhaka, Man Singh took up his position in this area and pitched his tent. There he dug a pond called Gangasagar to relieve the drinking water problem of his soldiers and the local population. And with the aim of defeating ‘Subedar Isha Khan’ he built a Kalimandir next to the pond seeking the boon of the goddess. Then this temple was named ‘Baradeswari Kali Mandir’. But now it is also known as ‘Rajarbagh Kali Mandir’ among the local people.
