Bookstores to add to your list this National Book Lover’s Day

Do you like books? Then today might be the perfect day to grab your favorite read and a cup of something tasty because we’re celebrating National Book Lover’s Day!

If piles of books and delicious aromas make you as happy as they make us, read on to find some great Local Guides’ recommendations of bookstores and book cafes for your bookish list.

Have you reviewed or taken photos of your favorite bookstore? Show us in the comments below!

The Hedgehog Cafe in Chandigarh, India

@Pratik_89 says: “This cafe has a small library in it. The ambience is so elegant one can easily fall in love with the place. The environment is so peaceful.

Books keep me happy; I’m a 90s kid. I love vintage [and all I need is] one small bench, a coffee, and my pretty books. I read books especially while traveling and I have a wishlist of cafes with books I wish to visit in Edinburg, Barcelona, and New York.”

Check out Pratik’s review here and his Google Maps list of book cafes here. Be sure to read his #Explore Books and Coffee posts on Connect, too!

Carturesti Carusel in Bucharest, Romania

Local Guide Dan Gerkol says: “A huge 4-story bookstore with practically anything you can think of! From books to manga, to merch, posters, records, crafting materials, wine, coffee, and even a cafe! Many books are in English, some are also available in Spanish, French, German, and of course, Romanian.

A truly amazing experience and a must-see when in Bucharest!”

Librairie Le Pigeonnier 信鴿法國書店 in Taipei, Taiwan

@ChanneLing says: “This is probably the best and only French bookstore in town. It’s also a hub for French lectures and events.

Another nice place in Taipei for bookworms, especially those who speak or are learning French (like me, lol), is Maison Temps-Rêves. It’s a children’s bookstore, selling picture books (mainly European) in French, English, Spanish, and other languages.

For me, reading is like a great adventure, taking me somewhere beyond my imagination, and there’s no limit to it. No matter what kind of literature it is, each [book] is like a treasure, and there’s so much I could learn!”

TSUTAYA in Morioka, Japan

@HiroyukiTakisawa says: “TSUTAYA is a chain bookstore in Japan, and this store is the largest of its kind in Morioka, offering a wide selection of books across various genres. There is a bakery cafe, called Coccinelle Bakery, inside the bookstore, where you can enjoy delicious bread and coffee. Moreover, you can bring one book from the book corner to the cafe for a sample reading!

I have always enjoyed reading Japanese fantasy novels from my youth. I love novels that allow me to delve into imaginary worlds conveniently, anywhere, and more easily than movies. Reading a book outdoors, in particular, is an awesome experience.”

The Last Bookstore in Los Angeles, USA

Local Guide Julianna Lau-Hawthorne says: “I wish I had all day to peruse the shelves and shelves of books here. It is a book lover’s dream. Books of every kind are available. There is a labyrinth on the 2nd floor and a tunnel of books to walk through. Local artists are also housed on the 2nd floor with their art on display and for sale.”

Oxford Book Shop - A photo taken from the second floor of the Park Street branch

Oxford Bookstore & Cafe is a well-established bookstore in Kolkata, West Bengal, India. It is located on Park Street, one of the most famous streets in Kolkata. The bookstore was founded in 1929 by Himanshu Gupta and has been serving book lovers for over 90 years.

Oxford Bookstore is known for its wide selection of books, both Indian and international. It has a large collection of fiction, non-fiction, academic books, children’s books, and more. The bookstore also has a good selection of magazines, newspapers, and stationery.

In addition to books, Oxford Bookstore also has a cafe on the first floor. The cafe is a popular spot for book lovers to relax and enjoy a cup of coffee or tea while they browse the shelves. The cafe also serves snacks and light meals.

Oxford Bookstore is a popular tourist destination in Kolkata. It is a great place to find books, gifts, and souvenirs. The bookstore is also a great place to spend an afternoon browsing the shelves and enjoying the atmosphere.

@DeniGu last July 2023 I went on a trip to the city of Kolkata in India, at that time I organized a friendship meet-up with local guides from Bangladesh and India.

@DeniGu I love books and can’t imagine not having the next book to read ready when I’m near to finishing the one I’m reading at that moment. And I like to switch between fiction and non-fiction (I’m in the middle of a Marilyn French novel right now).

A book-related trend in the last few years are small cabinets with books meant for exchange. Usually those are just outside a private residence, although I have seen them at more public places too (one was in fact an old fridge with a glass door). The idea is that you can just take any book you llke from it and then put another book of yours in it to replace the one you took out.

Here’s an example https://goo.gl/maps/6FNpBPS9uUSAKHfe8 . Most of them are currently categorized as ‘Library’ by lack of a more fitting category. I wonder if those also exist in other countries (I’ve seen them both in Belgium and Germany) - if so, it would be a great ccandidate for a new POI category.

Nice reminder @DeniGu

I have many Book-related lists on Google Maps and I’m going to publish even more publicly!

I was also thinking to share a post about a nice book store and this reminder forced me to do it sooner.

@DeniGu Thanks for sharing! As a book lover, I highly recommend visiting Sarasavi Bookshop in Sri Lanka.

Here is my review on Google Maps for this bookshop.

"This bookshop is undoubtedly one of the finest in Sri Lanka, offering an impressive collection of both academic and fictional books that cater to a wide range of interests.

The children’s section is a true delight, providing a joyful and engaging atmosphere where kids can immerse themselves in the wonders of reading. As for adults, there is a serene reading space that allows you to lose yourself in the captivating world of books, making it a perfect spot to spend a leisurely day.

A noteworthy addition to the bookshop’s offerings is their new car park, which adds tremendous value, especially in a bustling city where free parking can be hard to come by. This thoughtful amenity makes visiting the bookshop more convenient and hassle-free.

Overall, I highly recommend this bookshop to book enthusiasts of all ages. Its diverse collection, welcoming ambiance, and convenient facilities make it an excellent destination for book lovers and families alike."

@DeniGu this is a great post.

As far as book stores in Mandeville, Louisiana we have Barnes and Noble where I reviewed it two years ago. We also have a few thrift stores which are a great way to find treasured discounted books.

On my most recent visit to the store last month I added this Barnes & Noble Update. . I’m also a fan of home libraries in office homes which I plan on incorporating into my own space soon. (click blue links for references)
