A “Braai” is a Afrikaans word for BBQ. Meat cooked over hot coles. It is a tradition that stretches back to the “Great Trek”. It is today so popular that it has it’s own holiday it shares with national heritage day known as “National Braai Day”. On that day all South-Africans are encouraged to unite around fires and share their heritage, wave the flag and celebrate their heritage.
Even thou it was not 24 September yesterday, to have a “braai” at least once a week is not uncommon and all males are expected to be able to “Braai” and understand what wood goes with what cut of meat and so on. Yesterday we had some “Boerewors” which is mince meat with spices stuffed inside sheep intestine, chicken kebabs and “Braai Broodjies”. Braai broodjies translate to BBQ sandwiches. You toast it on the coles untill the cheese inside melt without burning the bread. Everyone has their own recipe but traditionally it is filled with onion, Tomato, cheese and chutney. Very delicious.
