Biryani is one of the most popular dishes of people from Indian sub-continent. This dish has origins from early Muslim rulers of the sub-continent. Nowadays, this is widely popular in not only India, but also neighbouring countries like Bangladesh and Pakistan.
Since ages, many people with different cultures have included Biryani in their diets. Thus, this dish has acquired different forms and tastes and varies from region to region. There are multiple varieties in both vegetarian as well as non-vegetarian biryanis.
Recently, I went to Isha Foundation and had the amazing veg biryani - along with curd in which small pieces of onions were mixed. Although I missed chutney (as I was late), this biryani along with mixed curd was just amazing.
Thank you for sharing this photo with us and this very interesting and instructive introduction to the biryani.
I love rice and I would like to try this particular one as it seems very delicious! Are there any particular occasions on which the biryani is prepared?
Few days ago, I went to one Indian restaurant in Sofia called Kohinoor, I didn’t check if they have biryani in their menu, but next time I will!
Surely, you should try biryani at least once. It would be the worth experience. But more than eating, I would suggest you to cook the biryani yourself. Actually, preparing this dish doesn’t require much skill, but you can prepare various forms of it using your creativity. I’ve tried only some, but I’ve seen my dad using different spices to give different flavoury touch.
As far as any particular occasions are concerned, they are mostly served in celebration gatherings and dinner parties. Sometimes, it is also prepared by Muslim households during their festivals.
The Kohinoor restaurant looks stunning in the pictures. The ambience has an Indian feel - esp. the paintings of Gods and royal durbars. Yes, you should try Biryani there (if they serve), and tell us your review about it. Were the staff and hotel owner also Indian there?
Thank you for the suggestions, I would definitely try to prepare the biryani by myself. I only hope that there are no special ingredients which are difficult to find outside of India. Do you have an easy recipe to share?
As far as the Kohinoor restaurant is concerned, the staff is mixed, Indians and Bulgarians.
You don’t need any special ingredients or spices to prepare a simple biryani. Yes, some high quality spices are added to give it a yummy flavour. I just follow the recipe taught verbally at home. But you can get the recipes on Internet. Many YouTube videos are also available which show some awesome ways to prepare. I’m not sure if I can share them here or not.
You can also get some tips from the Kohinoor restaurant staff, though I think they might not reveal the major tricks.
