Ratnagiri, a famous district of Konkan Maharashtra and famous for Chhatrapati Shivaji’s Ratnagiri Fort, is a tourist attraction.
This place is also the birthplace of Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak. The house where he was born on 23 July 1856 as Keshav Gangadhar Tilak has been opened as a museum for tourists. He was a great Indian nationalist, teacher and freedom fighter who disturbed the foundations of the British rule. He was one third of the Lal Bal Pal trio i.e. Lala Lajpat Rai, Bal Gangadhar Tilak and Bipin Chandra Pal who were the main protagonists of the Swaraj movement. All Indians considered him their leader and hence he was known by the title of Lokmanya. Mahatma Gandhi called him the father of modern India.
This Museum displays his personal belongings as this house is a traditional double storey house. I visited to pay the tribute to the great freedom fighter.
